Subnautica 2 Tadpole Fragments Location Guide

Unlocking the Tadpole in Subnautica 2 is one of the biggest early-game upgrades you can get. Up until this point, you are basically relying on your own swimming speed and oxygen tank for every exploration trip, which quickly becomes stressful once caves get deeper and resource runs start taking longer.

The moment you finally unlock the Tadpole, the game changes completely.

Travel becomes safer, exploration gets much faster, and deep-water areas suddenly feel far less intimidating. Honestly, getting your first vehicle is one of those classic Subnautica moments where you realize the game world is about to open up in a much bigger way.

The only difficult part is finding the Tadpole Fragments.

You need to scan three separate fragments to unlock the blueprint, and the locations are fairly deep for early-game players. The good news, though, is that there is one relatively safe route where several fragments spawn close together.

This guide will walk you through the easiest beginner-friendly Tadpole Fragment route without making the whole thing feel overly complicated.

Subnautica 2 Tadpole Fragments Location Guide

Before heading out, there are a few tools and upgrades that make this trip dramatically easier.

Technically, you can attempt it without them, but honestly, you are going to struggle quite a bit if you go completely unprepared.

I highly recommend bringing:

  • Scanner
  • Standard Air Tank
  • Air Bladder
  • Wakemakers if possible

The Scanner is obviously mandatory since you need it to scan the fragments themselves.

The Standard Air Tank is extremely important because the fragments sit between roughly 90 and 125 meters deep. Your starter oxygen supply is simply too limiting for comfortable exploration at those depths.

The Air Bladder is honestly a lifesaver here. If oxygen gets dangerously low, it can launch you rapidly toward the surface before things become fatal.

And if you already unlocked the Wakemakers, the extra movement speed makes this entire trip much less stressful.

Where to Start

Begin at your Lifepod and face roughly south, around the 190-degree direction on your compass.

From there, swim outward approximately 145 meters.

The route itself is not especially dangerous, but it definitely feels intimidating the first time because the ocean suddenly becomes much darker and deeper than the comfortable beginner areas near the Lifepod.

Try doing this during daytime if possible.

Seriously.

The area already feels unsettling enough during the day, and nighttime visibility makes the entire trip much more stressful than it needs to be.

First Tadpole Fragment Location

As you swim southward, you will eventually spot wreckage sitting above a deeper drop-off area.

Once you reach this wreck site, begin descending carefully.

At first glance, the depth looks terrifying, especially early in the game, but this particular route is actually fairly safe compared to some other fragment locations.

Near the wreckage, you should find the first Tadpole Fragment sitting along the seabed.

Pull out your Scanner and complete the scan.

Afterward, if your oxygen is getting low, immediately use the Air Bladder or swim directly back to the surface before continuing.

Do not get greedy trying to stay underwater too long this early.

Following the Crater Rim

After scanning the first fragment, return to the deeper area near the wreck.

You should notice a massive crater-like formation nearby.

Do not swim directly down into the center.

It goes much deeper, and early-game players really should avoid pushing too far downward right now.

Instead, stay along the outer edge of the crater and slowly follow the rim in an anti-clockwise direction.

This part feels slow and honestly a little nerve-wracking because of the darkness and depth, but if you stay near the outer edge, you should remain relatively safe.

Eventually, you will reach another section of wreckage.

Second Tadpole Fragment Location

Near this wreckage, swim inward through the opening sections carefully.

Inside, you can find another Tadpole Fragment waiting to be scanned.

This area also contains additional fragments and blueprints, including Moonpool-related technology, so it is definitely worth exploring a little while you are here.

Just keep a close eye on oxygen levels because it is very easy to get distracted inside wreckage structures.

Once scanned, you should now have two out of the three required fragments completed.

Third Tadpole Fragment Location

For the final fragment, continue following the outer crater region past the wreckage.

As you move forward, you should eventually notice a massive clam-like structure visible in the distance.

The area around this giant clam contains the final Tadpole Fragment.

Search carefully around the nearby seabed and wreckage sections.

Because this fragment often sits deeper than 100 meters, oxygen drains noticeably faster here, especially if you do not yet have better diving equipment.

Move quickly, complete the scan, and be ready to return upward immediately afterward.

Once the third fragment is scanned, the Tadpole blueprint unlocks automatically.

And honestly, seeing that blueprint notification pop up feels incredibly satisfying after all the tension of the dive.

Finding the Tadpole Fragments can feel intimidating at first because the depths involved are much deeper than most early-game exploration areas. But thankfully, this particular route is one of the safer ways to unlock the vehicle without wandering into truly dangerous territory.

Once you finally build the Tadpole, though, you immediately understand why players rush for it so early.

The ocean suddenly feels less restrictive, exploration becomes smoother, and those long stressful swims back to the surface start becoming a thing of the past.
