Day 2 of Servant of the Lake starts with a pretty simple-sounding job: make some coffee and wake everyone up. Of course, the game isn’t going to make that as easy as it sounds.
The coffee beans are locked inside a puzzle box, and the clues needed to solve it are scattered around the estate. If you’ve been clicking around wondering what the blank portraits have to do with your morning coffee, that’s exactly what you’re supposed to figure out.
Here’s the full solution.
Where to Find the Coffee Beans
At the beginning of Day 2, speak to the other housekeeper to start the day’s task.
Then head into the kitchen.
You’ll find a golden puzzle box sitting on the table. The coffee beans you need are inside this box, but you can’t simply open it yet.
The house has also changed since Day 1. Most of the areas you could previously access are now blocked, leaving you with access to the upstairs room beside William’s portrait.
This is where the clues for the coffee puzzle are located.
How the Coffee Puzzle Works
When you enter the room upstairs, look at the painting above the table with the coffee grinder.
Interact with the painting and click the black windows.
As you reveal the windows, you’ll find numbers and silhouettes of the three siblings.
This is where things get a little sneaky.
Whenever you reveal a window containing one of the siblings’ silhouettes, leave the painting and check the corresponding portrait elsewhere in the house.
The sibling will have reappeared in their portrait and, importantly, they’ll be pointing in a particular direction.
That direction tells you which window to select on the painting.
Finding the Three Numbers
Return to the painting after checking each sibling’s portrait.
For each sibling:
- Find their silhouette in the painting.
- Leave the painting and check their portrait.
- Look at which direction the sibling is pointing.
- Return to the painting.
- Click the window in that direction.
- Take note of the number displayed there.
Do this for all three siblings.
The three numbers you need are:
3 → 1 → 5
So the coffee puzzle box combination is:
315
Enter 3, 1, 5 into the golden puzzle box in the kitchen and you’ll receive the coffee beans.
How to Make the Coffee
Now that you’ve got the beans, there’s one slightly strange part left: the coffee grinder is upstairs.
Take the beans back to the coffee grinder in the upstairs room.
Place the beans inside and interact with the grinder until you’ve produced ground coffee.
Pick up the ground coffee and return downstairs to the kitchen.
Brewing the Coffee
Put the ground coffee into the coffee pot on the stove.
Wait for the coffee to finish brewing. Once you see the smoke coming from the pot, interact with it and add the finished coffee to your inventory.
Now you’ve finally got what the game asked for.
Serve Coffee to Aldous and William
Leave the kitchen and you’ll find that Aldous’ door is now open.
Speak to Aldous and he’ll ask you to serve him coffee.
To serve it:
- Select the coffee pot from your inventory.
- Interact with the cup in Aldous’ hand.
Once Aldous has been served, you’re not finished yet.
You also need to serve William.
So head over to William and give him the coffee as well. This completes the coffee-serving portion of Day 2 and allows you to continue progressing through the estate.
Coffee Puzzle Solution — Quick Answer
If you only came here because you were stuck on the puzzle, here’s the short version:
Golden puzzle box code: 315
The clues come from the three siblings’ silhouettes in the upstairs painting. Their portraits reveal the directions you need to follow, and the corresponding windows give you the numbers.
Once you have the beans, grind them upstairs → brew the ground coffee downstairs → serve Aldous → serve William.
That gets you through the opening coffee task of Day 2 without having to randomly click every window in the estate.
