Crimson Forest is the next major area you’ll explore in Phantom Blade Zero after completing Steel and Steam. Unlike Weeping Creek Valley, this region takes you through dense red forests, abandoned camps, caves, ruined villages, and areas covered in mysterious fog. There are plenty of hidden items here, and some of the most useful rewards are tucked away in places you might easily walk past.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through Crimson Forest step by step, including all the important Bells, weapons, accessories, Memory Flowers, bosses, NPCs, side quests, and hidden treasures. I’ll also explain which items you should collect along the way and which locations you’ll need to revisit later.
Before you begin, keep in mind that some rewards require specific keys, cranks, or Phantom Edges. The Hunter’s Chain Sickle is especially useful for reaching elevated platforms, while certain dungeon rewards require the Bastion ability later in the game. You don’t need to collect everything in one visit, but following the route below will help you avoid unnecessary backtracking.
Phantom Blade Zero Crimson Forest Walkthrough – Collectibles
Crimson Forest is the main setting for the chapter Snake’s Reflection. The area is filled with red foliage, narrow woodland paths, flooded caves, abandoned settlements, and hidden passages leading to optional bosses and collectibles.
Here is an overview of the collectibles and activities listed for the region.
| Collectible or activity | Listed total |
|---|---|
| Bells | 19 |
| Weapons and Phantom Edges | 6 |
| Accessories and medicines | 14 |
| Challenge locations | 2 |
| Sha-Chi Amber Shards or Fragments | 4 |
| Blackstone Shards or Fragments | 4 |
| Memory Flowers | 18 |
The supplied location list contains fewer named Bells than the stated total, so use the in-game map to confirm your final count. The same applies to collectible totals if you’ve already collected some items during the story.
Before Exploring Crimson Forest
I recommend keeping these things in mind as you move through the area:
- Explore the side paths before leaving each Bell. Several important rewards are hidden in caves, flooded sections, and elevated platforms.
- Collect the three Memory Flowers associated with Fellow Disciples. Completing this set increases your HP by 7%.
- Rescue Quick Hand Zhang and complete his treasure requests to obtain the Flying Dagger.
- Pick up the keys and cranks you encounter. They unlock shortcuts, secret rooms, and additional dungeon rewards.
- Speak with Yu’er whenever you encounter her, as she is connected to the A Healer’s Mercy quest.
- Return to the Thieves’ Camp dungeon after obtaining Bastion to collect items that cannot be reached during your first visit.
- Check the fog-covered forest carefully for Memory Flowers before challenging Bai Chilian.
Starting Crimson Forest: First Bell and Early Collectibles
1. Crimson Forest Bell
After completing Steel and Steam, follow the path into Crimson Forest and activate the first Bell.
Look around the starting area before continuing. You can find a Memory Flower Left by Inanis near this Bell. If it doesn’t appear where expected, leave the area and return using fast travel, then check again.
Be careful when crossing the murky water. Enemies can hide beneath the surface, especially around the starting section, so don’t rush through the shallow pools without checking your surroundings.
2. Traversal Talisman
Continue along the wooden scaffolding until you reach its lower section. Search near the corpse at the base of the structure to collect a Traversal Talisman.
This is an easy collectible to miss if you focus only on the main route, so inspect the ground near the wooden supports before moving on.
3. Start Snake’s Reflection
Follow the shaded path and climb toward the roof. Reaching the roof triggers the beginning of Snake’s Reflection.
Once the chapter starts, continue through the forest while checking the side paths for materials and hidden items.
4. Incense Ash
Look for a barricade near a lit campfire. An Incense Ash can be collected from this section.
It’s worth checking these small barricades and camp areas as you progress because some materials are placed slightly away from the main trail.
Abandoned Main Road and Hua Qianxiao
5. Abandoned Main Road Bell
Continue along the forest route until you reach the Abandoned Main Road Bell. Activate it before exploring the nearby platforms.
From the Bell, move forward and look for an elevated platform on the right side of the path. Climb up and open the golden chest to obtain the Shieldbreaker Talisman.
6. Blackstone Fragment Near the Platforms
After collecting the Shieldbreaker Talisman, continue climbing the platforms. Look for a narrow path that allows you to drop down to a lower section.
Follow this route to collect a Blackstone Fragment before returning to the main path.
7. Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic
Continue through Crimson Forest until you encounter Hua Qianxiao.
Defeating Hua Qianxiao rewards you with The Fanatic’s Broken Blade, one of the region’s listed weapons. After the battle, the bridge collapses and reveals a new path below.
Don’t immediately leave the area after the fight. There are several rewards along the newly opened route.
8. Simmering Brew and Tainted Crystal Shard
After the bridge collapses, drop down and inspect the ground to collect a Simmering Brew.
Follow the path back toward the forest. Just before reaching the cave, look for a purple item on the ground to obtain a Tainted Crystal Shard.
9. Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – I. Bonds of Fellowship
Enter the cave after the bridge collapse and look to the right side. You can collect Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – I. Bonds of Fellowship here.
Remember this location if you’re trying to collect the full Memory Flower set. There are two more flowers associated with Fellow Disciples elsewhere in Crimson Forest.
Meeting Quick Hand Zhang
10. Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – II. Orders Retrieved
Continue through the forest until you meet Quick Hand Zhang.
After the encounter, look for a cave entrance on the right side of the path. Enter the cave and search for Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – II. Orders Retrieved.
The same cave contains a flooded lower section, so explore both the upper and lower levels before leaving.
11. Blackstone Fragment in the Flooded Cave
Drop down into the flooded area inside the cave and open the chest to obtain a Blackstone Fragment.
Once you’ve collected it, look for a route leading toward the upper section above Quick Hand Zhang’s cage.
12. Free Quick Hand Zhang
You need to find a crank to lower Quick Hand Zhang’s cage. Climb to the upper section of the cave above his cage and locate the crank.
After activating it, drop down to the platform beneath the crank and open the golden chest to collect Cavalrybane.
Release Quick Hand Zhang from the cage and speak with him. This unlocks The Wily Hare’s Three Dens, one of the region’s collectible quests.
13. Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – III. No Leniency
Travel to the Outlaw Trap Bell and follow the path uphill. Just before the cave entrance, look for a blue flower.
Pick it up to obtain Memory Flower: Fellow Disciples – III. No Leniency.
Collecting all three Fellow Disciples Memory Flowers increases your HP by 7%, making this set worth completing as early as possible.
Outlaw Trap and the Hidden Cave
14. Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank
Enter the cave near the blue flower and inspect the table inside. You can collect Preservation Talisman Fragment I here.
Look on the ground nearby to pick up the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank. Keep this item because it opens a hidden entrance near the Outlaw Trap Bell.
15. Start Honor Among Thieves
Leave the cave and look for the tall red grass to the right. Defeat the enemy near the campfire to unlock the Honor Among Thieves Wulin Tale.
This quest continues later at the Thieves’ Camp, so don’t forget to speak with the relevant characters when you reach that settlement.
16. Preservation Talisman Fragment II
Return to the Outlaw Trap Bell and insert the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank to reveal an entrance leading into the cave below.
Drop down and follow the path. Look to the right side to find a golden item containing Preservation Talisman Fragment II.
Once you have both Preservation Talisman fragments, you’ll receive the Preservation Jar.
17. Sect Leader’s Snuff Bottle
Continue through the hidden cave to its end and open the chest containing the Sect Leader’s Snuff Bottle.
This is one of Quick Hand Zhang’s treasures, so keep it rather than overlooking it as an ordinary chest reward.
18. Sha-Chi Amber Fragment in the Hidden Cave
Return to the beginning of the cave and cross to the opposite side. Open the purple chest to obtain a Sha-Chi Amber Fragment.
After collecting it, leave the cave and look for a platform on the opposite side of the chest. Drop down to the platform and pick up the item to obtain Kuye Dew.
19. Jing Ye, the Outlaw
From the Outlaw Trap Bell, look for a sunken area containing a trap. Drop down to the edge and climb across to reach the arena where you’ll face Jing Ye, the Outlaw.
Defeating Jing Ye rewards you with the Outlaw Warblade.
After the fight, continue toward the hanging bridge. Before crossing it, drop down to the area below the bridge and collect Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – I. The Handwritten Order.
Crossing the Bridge and Reaching the Thieves’ Camp
20. Secrets of the Baishan Sect
Speak with Ju and Lanlan on the bridge to unlock Secrets of the Baishan Sect.
Make sure you speak to both women before continuing across the bridge. They are important NPCs for this Wulin Tale.
21. Silent Wrap
After crossing the bridge, enter the house on the right and speak with the Irreverent Thief.
He’ll ask you three questions. Answer them correctly to receive the Silent Wrap accessory.
The correct answers are:
- “Stole a landowner’s jade belt”
- “Butterfly”
- “The letter never said. His fate is unknown”
If you’re completing the region’s side quests, this is an important conversation to get right because it provides an accessory reward.
22. Thieves’ Camp Bell
Continue through the settlement and activate the Thieves’ Camp Bell, which is also identified as a Crane-shaped Bell.
Interacting with this Bell triggers a cutscene showing Zuo Shang and Huangxing sharing a drink.
Look around the Bell after the cutscene to collect six Mechanical Gear.
23. Yu’er and A Healer’s Mercy
Speak with Yu’er at the Thieves’ Camp. She’ll give you Yu’er’s Life-Saving Pill and unlock the A Healer’s Mercy quest.
Return to the Outlaw Trap Bell and enter the western cave. Speak with the man inside and give him the pill to progress the quest.
Don’t forget to return to Yu’er when you have an opportunity to continue her storyline.
24. Quick Hand Zhang’s Hideout and Quick Hand Pendant
Head toward the western side of the camp and climb the platform on the right. You can collect three Traversal Talismans here.
Open the door to enter Quick Hand Zhang’s hideout and speak with him. He’ll give you the Quick Hand Pendant and Quick Hand Zhang’s Relic List, which unlocks Quick Hand’s Request.
Zhang also sells accessories and materials, so check his inventory while you’re here.
Quick Hand Zhang’s Three Treasures
Quick Hand Zhang has three treasures hidden throughout Crimson Forest. You need to locate all three and return to him to receive the Flying Dagger.
25. Treasure One: Sect Leader’s Snuff Bottle
The first treasure is inside the hidden cave beneath the Outlaw Trap Bell.
Use the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank to open the entrance and follow the path to the chest containing the Sect Leader’s Snuff Bottle.
If you’ve already collected it during your earlier exploration, you don’t need to collect it again.
26. Treasure Two: Bloodstained Seal
Continue beyond the Thieves’ Camp into the small cave on the route ahead.
Look for an Emerald Treasure Chest on the right side of the cave. Open it to obtain the Bloodstained Seal.
27. Treasure Three: Ancient Crossbow
The third treasure is inside the Thieves’ Camp dungeon.
Enter the dungeon and look for the injured man near the entrance. The Emerald Treasure Chest containing the Ancient Crossbow is across from him.
You may need to revisit the dungeon after collecting its key. Keep this location in mind while progressing through the next section.
28. Claim the Flying Dagger
After collecting all three treasures, return to Quick Hand Zhang and speak with him.
He’ll reward you with the Flying Dagger, another weapon listed for Crimson Forest.
This is a worthwhile side objective because it gives you a weapon reward for exploring locations you would otherwise have little reason to revisit.
Beyond the Thieves’ Camp: Hidden Village and Red Serpent House
29. Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – II. Corruption or Cowardice?
Continue past the Thieves’ Camp and enter the small cave along the path.
Look inside to collect Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – II. Corruption or Cowardice?
Before leaving the cave, check the right side for the Emerald Treasure Chest containing the Bloodstained Seal if you haven’t collected Zhang’s second treasure yet.
30. Apprentice Healer’s Memory
Leave the cave and continue into the small village with several houses.
Head to the upper level of the village and defeat the enemies there. One of the rewards is Apprentice Healer’s Memory.
Collect this item before moving to the next section so you don’t have to return to the village later.
31. Forest Outpost Courtyard Key
Enter the first house on the left side of the village to find the Forest Outpost Courtyard Key.
You can use this key on the gate in the lower part of the village to access the route leading to the Red Serpent House Bell.
32. Blackstone Fragment in the Village
Before leaving the village, check the next house and open the purple chest to collect a Blackstone Fragment.
This is a good opportunity to clear the nearby houses while you’re already in the area.
33. Red Serpent House Bell
Use the Forest Outpost Courtyard Key to open the gate in the lower village and follow the route to the Red Serpent House Bell.
Activate it and check the surrounding paths before continuing toward Cliff of Longing.
34. Darkfire Charcoal, Mechanical Gear, and Incense Ash
Look for a cliff to the east of the Red Serpent House Bell.
You can reach the area by descending a ladder from above. Open the chest to collect Darkfire Charcoal, Mechanical Gear, and Incense Ash.
These materials are easy to miss if you stay on the lower main path, so look for the ladder while exploring the upper part of the settlement.
35. Exotic Copper Ingot at Cliff of Longing
Continue along the main route until you reach the Cliff of Longing Bell.
Look around the Bell to find an Exotic Copper Ingot.
After collecting it, move toward the sunken area and inspect the houses beyond it.
Cliffside Lodge and the Cellar
36. Cliffside Lodge Bell
Pass the sunken area and enter the house along the route. The Cliffside Lodge Bell is located behind the house, facing the western cliff.
Activate it before exploring the nearby buildings and underground passages.
37. Deliver Yu’er’s Life-Saving Pill
From the Cliffside Lodge area, look for a ladder leading down. You can find the cell gate where the injured man is waiting.
If you haven’t delivered Yu’er’s Life-Saving Pill yet, speak with him and give him the pill to progress A Healer’s Mercy.
38. Crimson Forest Cellar Crank
Climb the ladder next to the Bell and destroy the wall to enter the main house.
Search the balcony for an item that gives you the Crimson Forest Cellar Crank.
Return to the first floor of the house and insert the crank to reveal the entrance to the cellar.
39. Sha-Chi Amber Fragment in the Cellar
Enter the cellar and head to the right side of the first level. Open the chest to collect a Sha-Chi Amber Fragment.
This is one of the region’s important upgrade materials, so make sure you check the chest before heading deeper into the cellar.
40. Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – IV. The Means to Resist
Continue into the main area of the cellar and descend to the lower level.
Look for Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – IV. The Means to Resist.
Check the surrounding platforms as you explore because the cellar also connects to additional secret-room routes and upgrade materials.
41. Crimson Forest Secret Chamber Crank
Follow the bridgeway above the narrow path and cross to the opposite side.
You’ll find the Crimson Forest Secret Chamber Crank here. Pick it up and open the nearby chest to collect a Blackstone Fragment.
Keep the crank with you as you continue through the cellar. It is required for the next section.
42. Thieves’ Camp Dungeon Key
Continue toward the upper area of the cellar until you see an orange item. Pick it up to obtain the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon Key.
Drop down from this area and turn right. Use the crank you collected earlier and speak with the wounded disciple to progress the associated objective.
43. Ancient Crossbow in the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon
Return to the Thieves’ Camp and use the dungeon key to open the entrance.
Speak with the injured man near the entrance and give him Yu’er’s Life-Saving Pill if you haven’t already completed that part of A Healer’s Mercy.
Open the chest in the alcove across from him to obtain the Ancient Crossbow, one of Quick Hand Zhang’s three treasures.
44. Cave Prison Key and Sha-Chi Amber Fragments
Inside the dungeon, drop down into the sunken area and defeat the enemy to obtain the Cave Prison Key.
Return to the upper section and use the key to reach a Sha-Chi Amber Fragment.
Next, return to the flooded lower section and follow the narrow path. Turn left to find another Sha-Chi Amber Fragment.
Check both locations before leaving the dungeon, as the two fragments are found along different parts of the route.
Mirrorwood Entrance and Stone Hand Iron Fever
45. Mirrorwood Entrance Bell
Return to the Cliffside Lodge Bell and head toward the red gate on the southeastern side.
Follow the path to the branch and allow the cutscene to play. This leads you to the Mirrorwood Entrance Bell.
Activate the Bell and look nearby for Stone Hand Iron Fever’s Memory Flower – I. The Legacy.
46. Stone Hand Iron Fever
From the Mirrorwood Entrance Bell, drop down into the sunken area to fight Stone Hand Iron Fever.
Defeating this boss rewards you with the Iron Gauntlets.
After the fight, head toward the broken bridge and collect Stone Hand Iron Fever’s Memory Flower – II. Different Paths.
47. Inanis’ Memory Flower – I. The Performance
After defeating Stone Hand Iron Fever, enter the cave near the boss arena.
Look for Inanis’ Memory Flower – I. The Performance inside the cave.
Once you’ve collected it, exit the cave and follow the creek toward its end.
48. Solvent, Twinned Metal, and Forged Metal
At the end of the creek beyond the cave, open the chest to collect Solvent, Twinned Metal, and Forged Metal.
These materials are useful for equipment upgrades, so collect them before continuing toward the Mirrorwood Long Pillar.
Mirrorwood Long Pillar and the Man in Black
49. Mirrorwood Long Pillar Bell
Continue along the route to reach the Mirrorwood Long Pillar.
Interact with the dragon head next to the Bell to trigger a scene involving the Man in Black.
This encounter is an important part of the area’s progression, so prepare before interacting with the dragon head.
50. Miraculous Scabbard
Defeat the boss associated with the Mirrorwood Long Pillar encounter to obtain the Miraculous Scabbard accessory.
After the fight, continue toward the Burial Grounds and collect the Memory Flowers along the way.
Burial Grounds, Parting Mists, and the Human-Faced Banyan Tree
51. Burial Grounds Bell
Continue along the path until you reach the Burial Grounds Bell.
Look for a flower near the Bell to collect Inanis’ Memory Flower – II. Gravely Ill.
This is the first of several Memory Flowers connected to Inanis that you’ll find as you explore the forest.
52. Inanis’ Memory Flower – III. The Gilded Lotus
From the Burial Grounds, move toward the foggy area to the east.
Look for another flower to obtain Inanis’ Memory Flower – III. The Gilded Lotus.
Continue toward the southeastern edge of the area and speak with Inanis. This reveals the path leading to the Parting Mists Bell.
53. Parting Mists Bell
Follow the newly revealed route and activate the Parting Mists Bell.
The surrounding forest contains additional Memory Flowers and a boss encounter connected to the Human-Faced Banyan Tree.
54. Human-Faced Banyan Tree and Jing Ye
Head toward the tree in the middle of the lake and attack the Human-Faced Banyan Tree.
This triggers an encounter involving enemies and Jing Ye, the Outlaw. Defeat the enemies to progress through the area.
After emerging from the cave in Parting Mists, drop down into the lower section and collect Inanis’ Memory Flower – IV. An Uninvited Guest.
Mirrorwood Depths and the Remaining Memory Flowers
55. Mirrorwood Depths Bell
Continue through the forest to reach the Mirrorwood Depths Bell.
Near the Bell, look for Inanis’ Memory Flower – V. Soul Displacement Scroll.
After collecting it, enter the forest near the Bell and follow the marker on your map to find Inanis’ Memory Flower – VI. New Life.
56. Clear the Fog in the Forest
The fog-covered section contains additional Memory Flowers, but you’ll need to follow the correct doorways to clear the mist.
Start by going through the doorway to the right of the forest. Then move through the center doorway and pick up the flower that clears the mist.
This flower is Bai Chilian’s Memory Flower – I. The Only Salvation.
Continue toward the center of the forest and collect Bai Chilian’s Memory Flower – II. The Lady’s Prophecy.
Once you have both flowers, exit through the nearest gate and continue along the cleared route.
57. Threadbound Great Tree Bell
Clearing the mist opens the route to the Threadbound Great Tree Bell.
Activate it before approaching the large tree in the middle of the lake. This is the location of the region’s major final boss.
Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents
58. Final Boss: Bai Chilian
Head toward the tree in the center of the lake to begin the fight against Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents.
Make sure you’ve collected the nearby Memory Flowers and activated the Threadbound Great Tree Bell before starting the encounter. That way, you won’t need to retrace the entire fog-covered route if you need another attempt.
59. White Serpent and Crimson Viper
Defeating Bai Chilian rewards you with White Serpent and Crimson Viper, a weapon, and the Resonance Talisman accessory.
After the fight, you’ll be transported to the Place of Awakening Bell in Village of Lu.
If you still have optional dungeon rewards to collect, remember that you can return to Crimson Forest later.
Returning to the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon With Bastion
60. Brass Chest Guard
After acquiring Bastion from Zhuo Bi, return to the Thieves’ Camp dungeon.
Use Bastion to protect yourself from the arrow trap inside the dungeon. This allows you to reach the chest at the end, which contains the Brass Chest Guard accessory.
This reward requires an ability you may not have during your first visit, so don’t worry if you couldn’t reach it earlier.
61. Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – III. A Newfound Power
Return to the upper level of the Thieves’ Camp dungeon and use Bastion again.
This opens access to an overlooking area where you can collect Memory Flower: On Perfect Transcension – III. A Newfound Power.
If you’re working toward completing every Memory Flower collection, make sure you return here after obtaining Bastion.
62. Forged Metal Near Lakeside Arch Bridge
When you return to the region later, travel to the Lakeside Arch Bridge Bell.
Turn right toward the campfire and open the nearby chest to collect Forged Metal.
This is a useful final cleanup stop if you’re collecting all the upgrade materials in Crimson Forest.
