The Summoner is one of Terraria’s most unusual classes. Instead of dealing all your damage directly, you build an army of minions, mark priority targets with whips, and add sentries for extra damage while concentrating on movement and survival.
In Terraria 1.4.5, Summoner progression has considerably more options than it once did. New whips and summons fill several old progression gaps, while familiar combinations such as Blade Staff with tag damage and Firecracker with heavy-hitting minions remain important.
This guide covers Summoner progression from your first Abigail’s Flower through Stardust Armor, including recommended summons, whips, armor, sentries, accessories, buffs, and boss-stage loadouts.
Terraria 1.4.5 Summoner Class Guide – Best Weapons, Armor
A complete Summoner build revolves around three weapon systems:
Minions are persistent followers summoned using staves and other summon weapons. They automatically attack nearby enemies and normally consume minion slots.
Whips are your active weapons. Hitting an enemy with a whip tells your minions to prioritize that target and applies the whip’s summon tag or special effect.
Sentries remain in a fixed area and attack enemies independently. Most importantly, sentries have their own capacity separate from regular minion slots.
That means a good Summoner isn’t completely passive. Your minions provide most of your sustained damage, but you’ll get substantially better results by continually marking bosses, positioning sentries where they’ll actually connect, and dodging while your army keeps attacking.
Terraria 1.4.5 Summoner Progression
Here’s the general progression to aim for:
| Stage | Summon | Whip | Armor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Boss | Abigail / Flinx / Vampire Frog | Cobwhip / Snapthorn | Flinx Fur Coat |
| Pre-Skeletron | Mushroom / Imp / Vampire Frog | Starcrash / Snapthorn | Obsidian Armor |
| Wall of Flesh | Mushroom / Imp | Spinal Tap / Starcrash | Obsidian Armor |
| Early Hardmode | Blade / Sanguine / Spider | Cool Whip / Firecracker | Spider Armor |
| Pre-Plantera | Blade / Sanguine / Optic | Durendal | Hallowed Armor |
| Post-Plantera | Raven / Desert Tiger / Xeno | Dark Harvest / Morning Star / Kaleidoscope | Tiki / Spooky |
| Pre-Moon Lord | Stardust Dragon / Stardust Cell / Terraprisma | Kaleidoscope / Constellation | Tiki / Spooky |
| Endgame | Terraprisma / Stardust Dragon / Stardust Cell | Possession / Constellation | Stardust Armor |
You don’t need every weapon in the table. Summoner is particularly dependent on drops, so treat this as a progression route rather than a mandatory checklist.
Best Modifiers for Summoner
For whips, Legendary is generally the modifier to target when the weapon supports it. Whip speed and size are valuable because they make maintaining tags safer.
For summon and sentry weapons, Fabled is an excellent target.
Accessories are more situational:
Menacing increases damage and is the straightforward offensive choice.
Warding adds defense and is particularly valuable for Summoner because the class is naturally fragile.
Lucky can provide additional critical strike chance, although not every Summoner mechanic benefits equally from critical hits.
For Expert and especially Master Mode, don’t underestimate Warding. Losing a little theoretical DPS is often worthwhile when the additional defense keeps you alive while your summons continue dealing damage.
Summon Tag Damage Explained
Whips aren’t simply melee-range weapons that happen to deal summon damage.
When you strike an enemy, your minions prioritize that target and gain the whip’s tag effect. The type of effect determines which summons pair particularly well with the whip.
Fast-attacking summons generally benefit greatly from flat summon tag damage because they’re able to trigger that additional damage repeatedly.
That’s one reason Blade Staff works so well with tag-oriented setups.
Slower summons with powerful individual attacks can instead benefit heavily from effects based around the original minion hit.
Firecracker is the classic example. Pairing it with a summon capable of delivering heavy individual attacks can produce much better results than simply choosing whichever whip has the largest number on its tooltip.
Should You Mix Minions?
Sometimes.
Certain minion attacks can interfere with other identical minions because of enemy immunity frames. This is particularly relevant during pre-Hardmode progression.
As a result, something like:
1 Vampire Frog + several Flinx/Mushroom summons
can sometimes perform better than blindly filling every slot with identical minions.
However, this rule doesn’t apply universally.
Some summons are specifically designed to become stronger when you dedicate additional slots to the same creature. Important examples include:
- Abigail
- Desert Tiger
- Stardust Dragon
When using these, committing additional slots to the same summon is generally part of their intended strength.
Essential Summoner Buffs
The Summoning Potion should become a standard part of your boss preparation because it provides another minion slot.
The Bewitching Table gives another minion-capacity buff and becomes accessible through the Dungeon.
The War Table does something similar for sentries. Because sentry capacity is separate from minion capacity, it’s effectively another source of damage.
Flasks are also valuable because your whip can apply their effects.
Flask of Ichor is particularly strong because lowering enemy defense benefits the attacks coming from the rest of your build. Corruption players can use Flask of Cursed Flames when Ichor isn’t readily available.
For difficult bosses, combine these with the usual Terraria buffs such as Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, Endurance, Lifeforce, Wrath/Rage, and food.
Pre-Boss Summoner Build
Early Summoner is arguably the roughest part of the entire playthrough.
You don’t have enough slots for a proper army yet, your armor options are limited, and early minion AI can occasionally make you question which side your summons are actually on.
Focus on getting:
Summon: Abigail’s Flower → Flinx Staff/Vampire Frog Staff
Whip: Cobwhip → Snapthorn
Armor: Flinx Fur Coat with defensive pieces
Accessories: Feral Claws, Shark Tooth Necklace, movement accessories
Abigail’s Flower
Abigail’s Flower is one of the easiest ways to begin a dedicated Summoner run.
It grows around gravestones. Unlike summons that create multiple independent creatures, summoning Abigail again strengthens the existing Abigail.
She’s useful for early exploration because obtaining her doesn’t require defeating a boss or gathering advanced crafting materials.
Flinx Staff
The Flinx Staff is your first practical crafted upgrade.
Farm Snow Flinxes in the underground Snow biome for Flinx Fur, then combine it with Gold or Platinum Bars.
Flinxes offer solid mobility and can attack enemies above ground level reasonably well.
Vampire Frog Staff
If you’re willing to deal with Blood Moon fishing, Vampire Frog Staff can provide excellent early damage.
It comes from enemies encountered while fishing during a Blood Moon.
Vampire Frogs attack rapidly and perform especially well against enemies they can consistently reach. Their main limitation is vertical mobility.
Safely Farming Vampire Frog Staff
Early Blood Moon fishing can be brutal, particularly on Expert and Master Mode.
Instead of fighting fishing enemies in an open arena, build an enclosed fishing shelter with a small opening that allows your fishing line through.
Your summons can then help deal with the spawned enemies without leaving you completely exposed.
Best Pre-Boss Whips
Cobwhip
Cobwhip provides an accessible starting whip in Terraria 1.4.5.
It’s useful primarily because it gives dedicated Summoners a proper active weapon before they’re ready to explore more dangerous areas.
Soulscourge and Vasculash
Your world evil provides another step in progression.
Corruption characters can pursue Soulscourge, while Crimson characters have Vasculash.
Either can bridge the gap between your earliest equipment and stronger Jungle progression.
Snapthorn
Snapthorn remains one of your major early goals.
Its summon tag and attack-speed benefits make your entire setup noticeably stronger, and it remains useful across several early bosses.
Best Early Summoner Armor
The Flinx Fur Coat is the obvious Summoner-oriented early chest piece because of its minion benefits.
You can combine it with Gold or Platinum armor pieces when you need additional defense.
Alternatively, Pumpkin Armor boosts general damage and therefore works as an early offensive option even though it isn’t specifically Summoner equipment.
Once you’ve defeated your world evil boss, however, you’ll want to start working toward Obsidian Armor.
Best Early Summoner Accessories
Feral Claws improve whip usability and later contribute to stronger glove upgrades.
Shark Tooth Necklace provides armor penetration and works particularly well with rapid, relatively low-damage attacks.
After that, prioritize movement.
Running boots, extra jumps, Magiluminescence, Frog Leg, Fledgling Wings, balloons, and other movement equipment can contribute more to your actual boss performance than another small damage bonus.
Pre-Evil Boss Summoner Build
By the time you’re fighting the Eye of Cthulhu or your world evil boss, aim for:
Summons: Vampire Frog + Flinx, or Abigail
Whip: Snapthorn/Soulscourge/Vasculash
Armor: Flinx Fur Coat setup
Accessories: Feral Claws + mobility
Eye of Cthulhu
Abigail and Flinxes both work well.
Vampire Frogs can deal excellent damage if you keep the Eye reasonably close to your platforms rather than moving so high that they struggle to connect.
Expert Mode players should make use of the Shield of Cthulhu after defeating it.
Eater of Worlds
Whips work particularly well against the Eater’s segmented body.
Build enough vertical space to reposition when it surrounds the arena. Your minions can continue attacking while you concentrate on avoiding contact damage.
Brain of Cthulhu
Use your whip to identify and mark the real Brain during the illusion phase.
Once marked, your minions can immediately concentrate their attacks on the correct target.
Pre-Skeletron Summoner Build
After defeating your world evil boss, one of your biggest upgrades becomes available:
Obsidian Armor.
Recommended setup:
Summons: Mushroom Staff / Imp Staff / Vampire Frog
Whip: Starcrash or Snapthorn
Armor: Obsidian Armor
Sentry: Houndius Shootius / Ballista Rod
Obsidian Armor vs Bee Armor
Both sets support Summoner, but they encourage different playstyles.
Bee Armor emphasizes minion capacity and works well when you want to spend most of the fight concentrating on dodging.
Obsidian Armor is preferable for an active whip playstyle because its bonuses make whipping enemies safer and more effective.
For most players actively using their whip, Obsidian Armor is the more comfortable option.
Mushroom Staff
The Mushroom Staff is an important Terraria 1.4.5 pre-Hardmode summon.
Its minions detect enemies and dive toward them, producing explosions.
One of its biggest advantages is how effectively multiple Mushroom summons can operate together compared with some older summons whose attacks can interfere with each other.
That makes it particularly interesting for fights such as Skeletron and Wall of Flesh.
Imp Staff
The Imp Staff remains a dependable ranged option.
Imps are particularly useful against enemies that spend considerable time airborne, and their stronger individual attacks also create useful synergy with certain whip effects.
Starcrash
Starcrash offers a different approach from simple flat tag damage.
Minion attacks against the marked target can generate meteor strikes. Because these work well with stronger minion attacks, Starcrash can pair effectively with summons such as Imps and Mushrooms.
Its limitation is accuracy.
Against fast-moving targets, the meteors aren’t always as reliable as a straightforward whip effect. Don’t hesitate to return to Snapthorn when the boss’s movement makes Starcrash inconsistent.
Skeletron Summoner Strategy
Use Mushrooms, Imps, or a mixture of your strongest available minions.
Tag Skeletron’s hands while it’s safe, but don’t become greedy during the spinning-head phase. Your summons don’t stop attacking just because you’re concentrating entirely on movement.
That’s one of the class’s biggest advantages.
A Summoner doesn’t need to trade hits to maintain all of their damage.
Best Wall of Flesh Summoner Build
After defeating Skeletron, head into the Dungeon for several important upgrades.
Recommended setup:
Summon: Mushroom Staff / Imp Staff
Whip: Spinal Tap / Starcrash
Armor: Obsidian Armor
Accessory: Pygmy Necklace
Buff: Bewitching Table + Summoning Potion
Sentry: Houndius Shootius / Ballista Rod
Spinal Tap
Spinal Tap is your primary straightforward pre-Hardmode whip upgrade.
Its reach and ability to deal with groups make it particularly useful against the Hungry surrounding the Wall of Flesh.
Best Wall of Flesh Summons
Mushroom Staff is particularly effective here because of how its movement interacts with the Wall’s constant horizontal progression.
Imps are another reliable choice.
You can also build a mixed army of:
Mushroom + Imp + Vampire Frog + Flinx
depending on your available slots and what you’ve actually managed to obtain.
Wall of Flesh Sentries
Place your sentry farther along your Hellbridge before starting the encounter.
As you approach that section during the fight, the Wall will spend more time inside the sentry’s effective range.
Hardmode Summoner Progression
Hardmode is where Summoner starts becoming substantially more powerful.
Your first destination should generally be the Spider biome.
Farm Spider Fangs and craft:
Spider Armor
Spider Staff
Queen Spider Staff
That gives you a complete early-Hardmode Summoner package without depending on an exceptionally rare drop.
Pre-Mech Boss Summoner Build
Recommended setup:
Minion: Blade Staff or Sanguine Staff
Whip: Cool Whip or Firecracker
Armor: Spider Armor
Sentry: Queen Spider Staff
Accessories: Summoner Emblem, Pygmy Necklace, Berserker’s Glove
Wings: Your best available Hardmode wings
Blade Staff
Blade Staff specializes in rapid attacks and works exceptionally well with flat tag damage.
If you enjoy aggressively maintaining whip effects, it’s one of the strongest early-Hardmode options.
Sanguine Staff
Sanguine Staff’s main advantage is reliability.
Its bats track moving targets extremely well, which is enormously useful against bosses that spend most of the encounter flying around the arena.
Blade Staff vs Sanguine Staff
A simple rule works well:
Blade Staff: better for rapid tag-damage interactions.
Sanguine Staff: better when reliable tracking and stronger individual attacks matter.
Neither is automatically superior in every encounter.
Firecracker vs Cool Whip
Your minion choice should influence your whip.
Firecracker + Sanguine Staff works well because Firecracker rewards stronger individual minion attacks.
Cool Whip + Blade Staff is a more natural match for fast repeated attacks and tag-oriented damage.
This is one of the most important principles for playing Summoner effectively: don’t evaluate your whip separately from your minions.
Pre-Plantera Summoner Build
Once you’ve defeated the mechanical bosses, move toward:
Minion: Blade / Sanguine / Optic Staff
Whip: Durendal
Armor: Hallowed Armor
Sentry: upgraded Old One’s Army sentry
Hallowed Armor
Hallowed Armor is an excellent Summoner choice because of Holy Protection.
Summoner already has strong damage by this point. What it lacks is forgiveness.
Being able to avoid an incoming hit after activating the set effect can be considerably more valuable than squeezing another small amount of theoretical damage from your armor.
Optic Staff
Optic Staff summons miniature versions of Retinazer and Spazmatism.
It’s a useful alternative when you want minions capable of applying pressure at different ranges.
Durendal
Durendal becomes one of your major whip upgrades.
Its tag and speed-related benefits make it excellent for maintaining pressure while your minions continue attacking.
Plantera Summoner Strategy
Build a spacious Underground Jungle arena instead of trying to fight Plantera inside naturally generated tunnels.
Sanguine Staff provides particularly convenient tracking.
Blade Staff can produce excellent damage if you’re comfortable staying close enough to maintain Durendal tags.
During Plantera’s second phase, prioritize a wider movement circle. Your summons continue attacking while you’re retreating, so there is little reason to risk a death for one additional whip strike.
Post-Plantera Summoner Build
Defeating Plantera unlocks one of Summoner’s biggest progression jumps.
Your main armor options become:
Tiki Armor
Spooky Armor
Old One’s Army armor
Your summon selection also expands dramatically.
Tiki Armor vs Spooky Armor
Spooky Armor is the straightforward damage choice.
Tiki Armor emphasizes minion capacity and whip usability, particularly range.
Use Spooky when you’re confident you can survive while maximizing damage.
Use Tiki when additional whip reach allows you to safely maintain tags that you’d otherwise be unable to apply.
Real combat DPS isn’t the same thing as tooltip DPS.
Best Post-Plantera Summons
Raven Staff
Ravens provide strong flying pressure and are obtained through Pumpkin Moon progression.
Desert Tiger Staff
Desert Tiger behaves differently from standard independent summons.
Assigning additional minion slots strengthens the Tiger, so it’s generally better to commit to it rather than summon one Tiger and fill every remaining slot with unrelated minions.
Xeno Staff
Xeno Staff is one of the easiest late-game summons to recommend because of its excellent targeting.
The UFOs can keep pressure on mobile targets that cause less accurate summons to waste significant time.
Terraprisma
Terraprisma is one of Terraria’s strongest summons, but obtaining it is deliberately difficult.
You need to defeat the Empress of Light during daytime under the required conditions, turning the encounter into a high-risk challenge.
Treat Terraprisma as an optional reward for mastering the fight rather than something every Summoner must obtain before progressing.
Best Post-Plantera Whips
Several strong options become available:
Vulgar Display of Flower
Dark Harvest
Morning Star
Kaleidoscope
Dark Harvest works particularly well with fast-attacking summons.
Morning Star provides strong tag support.
Kaleidoscope becomes an excellent general-purpose late-game whip after Empress of Light.
Best Post-Plantera Accessories
Your accessory progression should now include:
Necromantic Scroll – additional summon power and capacity.
Hercules Beetle – improves summon damage and knockback.
Papyrus Scarab – combines Necromantic Scroll and Hercules Beetle effects and becomes one of Summoner’s core late-game accessories.
Other useful options include Summoner Emblem, Pygmy Necklace, Berserker’s Glove, Master Ninja Gear, and defensive accessories.
Duke Fishron and Empress of Light
Technically, Duke Fishron can be challenged surprisingly early in Hardmode.
Practically, most players should wait.
Post-Plantera equipment makes the fight far more reasonable.
Fishron can provide useful Summoner progression including Tempest Staff and other relevant equipment.
Empress of Light also becomes available after Plantera.
Her normal encounter can provide Kaleidoscope, while the daytime challenge is associated with obtaining Terraprisma.
Unless you’re deliberately attempting a challenge run, don’t build your entire progression route around acquiring Terraprisma immediately.
Pre-Lunar Summoner Build
At this stage, a realistic build looks like:
Minion: Xeno Staff / Raven / Desert Tiger / Terraprisma
Whip: Kaleidoscope / Dark Harvest / Morning Star / Electric Eel
Armor: Spooky / Tiki / defensive OOA set
Accessory core: Papyrus Scarab + Necromantic Scroll + Summoner Emblem
Old One’s Army also provides access to the final versions of its sentry weapons, giving you much better independent sentry damage.
Pre-Moon Lord Summoner Build
Destroying the Stardust Pillar gives you access to two extremely important summons:
Stardust Dragon Staff
Stardust Cell Staff
Stardust Dragon vs Stardust Cell
The Stardust Dragon becomes longer and stronger as you dedicate additional minion slots to it.
Because of that, it’s generally best to commit heavily to the Dragon rather than mixing a tiny Dragon into an unrelated army.
Stardust Cells create independent attackers and can perform better when multiple targets, movement, or periods of boss invulnerability make the Dragon less efficient.
Terraprisma remains an excellent alternative if you’ve already obtained it.
Best Pre-Moon Lord Whips
Kaleidoscope remains an excellent general choice.
Constellation offers another late-game option and can work particularly well alongside Stardust progression.
Firecracker can still produce powerful interactions with heavy Stardust Dragon attacks, but its shorter reach makes it much more dangerous to use against Moon Lord.
Best Armor for Moon Lord
There isn’t one answer for every player.
Spooky Armor
Use it for maximum offensive Summoner performance.
Tiki Armor
Use it when additional whip usability lets you safely maintain your effects.
Defensive Old One’s Army Armor
Consider defensive pieces when you’re struggling to survive.
This is particularly valuable in Master Mode. Your Stardust summon can deal enormous damage without you sacrificing every point of defense to increase it further.
Endgame Summoner Build
After defeating Moon Lord, craft Stardust Armor.
A final Summoner setup can use:
| Slot | Recommended Equipment |
|---|---|
| Armor | Stardust Armor |
| Minion | Terraprisma / Stardust Dragon / Stardust Cell |
| Whip | Possession / Constellation |
| Sentry | Rainbow Crystal / Lunar Portal |
| Accessory | Papyrus Scarab |
| Accessory | Necromantic Scroll |
| Accessory | Summoner Emblem |
| Accessory | Berserker’s Glove or defensive option |
| Mobility | Celestial Starboard / endgame wings |
Stardust Armor
Stardust Armor is the dedicated endgame Summoner set.
It provides substantial Summoner bonuses, additional minion capacity, and the Stardust Guardian, completing the transition from the extremely vulnerable early-game Summoner into a character surrounded by an entire supernatural army.
Best Endgame Minions
Terraprisma offers extremely fast and accurate attacks.
Stardust Dragon provides exceptional sustained single-target damage when you dedicate your available minion slots to strengthening it.
Stardust Cells provide multiple independent attackers and can perform better in situations where the Dragon’s movement or targeting becomes inefficient.
Don’t assume one is automatically best for everything.
Best Endgame Sentries
Rainbow Crystal Staff
Creates powerful area damage and works particularly well when enemies remain around its effective zone.
Lunar Portal Staff
Creates a portal that fires a powerful beam.
Since sentries don’t consume your standard minion capacity, there’s little reason not to deploy one before a major encounter.
Best Summoner Accessories
Some of the strongest general accessories throughout late-game progression are:
Papyrus Scarab – one of the best overall Summoner accessories.
Necromantic Scroll – excellent minion damage and capacity.
Summoner Emblem – straightforward summon damage.
Pygmy Necklace – additional minion capacity.
Hercules Beetle – summon damage and knockback.
Berserker’s Glove – useful for active whip builds.
For survivability, consider:
Frozen Shield
Worm Scarf
Brain of Confusion
Master Ninja Gear
Charm of Myths
Summoner is already capable of exceptional damage. Replacing one offensive accessory with something that prevents your death can actually increase your average boss DPS.
Best Wings and Mobility for Summoner
Mobility is particularly important because your summons continue attacking while you’re dodging.
Early on, use whatever combination of running boots, balloons, jumps, mounts, or Fledgling Wings you can obtain.
During early Hardmode, options such as Frozen, Fairy, Harpy, and Fin Wings are sufficient.
Later upgrades include:
Fishron Wings
Empress Wings
Betsy’s Wings
Celestial Starboard
Infinite-flight mounts such as Witch’s Broom can also replace conventional mobility equipment in certain builds and potentially free accessory slots.
Classic vs Expert vs Master Mode Summoner
The basic weapon progression remains similar across all difficulties, but accessory choices change substantially.
Classic Mode doesn’t provide the Expert-exclusive boss accessories.
Expert Mode gives access to items such as Shield of Cthulhu, Worm Scarf/Brain of Confusion, Demon Heart, and Soaring Insignia.
Master Mode provides additional accessory flexibility but dramatically increases incoming damage.
For Master Mode Summoner, defensive equipment becomes much more attractive.
Hallowed Armor, Warding modifiers, defensive Old One’s Army pieces, Frozen Shield, and strong mobility can all outperform a glass-cannon build in actual gameplay.
