If you’ve been keeping an eye on Soulbound Online, you’ve probably noticed people calling it a mix of an MMO and a roguelike. After spending time with the demo, I can honestly see why. It has the familiar long-term progression you’d expect from an MMO, but every dungeon run throws in roguelike mechanics that keep each adventure feeling a little different.
One thing to keep in mind before diving in is that the footage and information we’ve seen comes from the demo build. Since the game is entering Early Access, some systems, numbers, and mechanics may change over time. Still, the core gameplay loop is already easy to understand, and if you know how these systems connect, you’ll have a much smoother start than most new players.
If you’re wondering what you should focus on first, how dungeons work, why life skills matter, or how abilities and weapons actually affect your build, this guide will walk you through everything.
Soulbound Online Beginner Guide – Dungeons, Life Skills
Soulbound Online combines several genres into one experience.
You’ll spend your time:
- Completing quests.
- Gathering resources.
- Crafting equipment.
- Running roguelike dungeons.
- Improving permanent gear.
- Building your character through weapons, abilities, and passive skills.
Unlike traditional MMOs where most progression comes from grinding levels, Soulbound Online splits progression between your permanent character and temporary dungeon runs.
Once you understand that difference, everything else starts making much more sense.
Character Creation
If you’re expecting an incredibly detailed character creator, that’s not really what Soulbound Online is aiming for.
The customization options are fairly straightforward.
You’ll choose your appearance, create your character, and jump into the game within a few minutes.
Personally, I don’t mind this approach. Instead of spending half an hour adjusting hairstyles and facial features, you can get straight into exploring the world.
Don’t Ignore Life Skills
At first glance, activities like mining or gathering plants might seem optional.
They’re not.
Life skills are a major part of progression because they’re how you’ll collect the materials needed for crafting and upgrading equipment.
Some of the primary life skills include:
- Mining
- Foraging
- Planting
You’ll likely spend a good amount of time doing all three throughout your adventure.
Watch Your Stamina
Every life skill action consumes stamina.
That means you can’t endlessly gather materials without eventually running out of energy.
Thankfully, stamina naturally regenerates over time.
You can also use recovery items if you want to continue farming without waiting.
If you’re planning a long gathering session, it’s worth bringing a few stamina recovery items with you so your progress doesn’t suddenly come to a stop.
Follow the Main Quests First
When you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to wander off and explore everything.
While exploration is fun, following the main quest is usually the better choice.
Main quests help you:
- Learn the game’s mechanics.
- Unlock important systems.
- Earn useful rewards.
- Understand where to go next.
Side quests are also worth completing whenever you come across them since they provide additional resources and experience.
Dungeons
Dungeons are where Soulbound Online really starts to feel different from a traditional MMO.
Each dungeon run works like a roguelike adventure.
Inside the dungeon you’ll:
- Gain temporary levels.
- Unlock temporary upgrades.
- Choose powerful relics.
- Improve your build for that run.
However, once the dungeon ends, those temporary upgrades disappear.
Only your permanent rewards remain.
This creates an interesting balance between short-term power and long-term progression.
Rewards
Even though your temporary dungeon levels reset, your rewards don’t.
After completing a dungeon, you’ll keep things like:
- Equipment
- Gold
- Crafting materials
These permanent rewards are what gradually make your character stronger over time.
Think of each dungeon as an investment into your overall account rather than a permanent character level grind.
Equipment
Outside of dungeons, equipment becomes one of the biggest sources of permanent power.
The game features multiple equipment slots that improve your character’s overall stats.
Every upgrade makes future dungeon runs a little easier.
Rather than replacing gear constantly, you’ll slowly build a stronger character through better equipment and smarter upgrades.
Tools
Besides combat gear, you’ll also unlock various tools.
These aren’t weapons.
Instead, they’re used for gathering resources through life skills.
Better tools usually make resource farming much smoother, so don’t overlook them while focusing only on combat upgrades.
Cosmetics Don’t Affect Power
If you enjoy customizing your character, Soulbound Online also includes cosmetic items.
These exist purely to change your appearance and don’t directly increase your combat effectiveness.
It’s a nice option for players who enjoy collecting outfits without creating any gameplay advantage.
Stat
One feature I really appreciate is the ability to hover over stats for detailed explanations.
Instead of guessing what each attribute affects, the game tells you exactly what it does.
If you’re new to RPGs, take a few moments to read these descriptions.
Understanding your stats early makes future equipment decisions much easier.
Abilities
Abilities work almost like secondary weapons.
You can equip up to three abilities at once.
Each one can be upgraded to improve its effectiveness and rarity.
As you unlock more abilities, you’ll naturally start experimenting with different combinations depending on your preferred playstyle.
Relic Pool
One of the most unique systems in Soulbound Online is the Relic Pool.
Every ability has its own collection of possible upgrades.
Whenever you level up during a dungeon, you’ll receive relic choices based on the abilities you’ve equipped.
This means two players using different abilities may receive completely different upgrade options during the same dungeon.
Because of this, every run feels a little different, even if you’re entering the same dungeon repeatedly.
Weapons Have Their Own Relic Pools Too
It’s not just abilities that affect your upgrade choices.
Weapons also come with unique relic pools.
That means your weapon influences:
- Available relics
- Possible upgrades
- Overall playstyle
This adds another layer of strategy.
Instead of choosing a weapon based only on raw damage, it’s worth considering what kind of relic combinations it can unlock later in the run.
Build Synergy Is More Important Than Raw Damage
A weapon with slightly lower damage may actually perform better if its relic pool works perfectly with your abilities.
The strongest builds often come from combining relics that complement one another rather than simply equipping whatever has the highest attack number.
As you unlock more weapons and abilities, don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations.
Skills Level
Unlike many RPGs, Soulbound Online doesn’t ask you to manually spend skill points every time you level up.
Instead, skills improve naturally through use.
For example:
Strength
The more your Strength skill improves, the more weapon damage you’ll deal.
Technology
Technology increases the effectiveness of your abilities, making ability-focused builds much stronger over time.
Because skills level through gameplay instead of manual point allocation, progression feels much more organic.
You’ll naturally become better at the things you spend the most time doing.
Soulbound Online feels like an interesting blend of MMO progression and roguelike gameplay. While your temporary dungeon levels disappear after every run, the gear, gold, crafting materials, and experience you earn continue pushing your character forward. That constant loop of gathering resources, improving equipment, experimenting with relic combinations, and returning stronger each time is what makes the progression feel rewarding.
Since Early Access is just getting started, there’s a good chance some mechanics will evolve over the coming months. Even so, learning the fundamentals now—especially life skills, dungeon progression, relic pools, and gear upgrades—will give you a solid foundation as the game continues to grow.
