Doom The Dark Ages Revelations Proving Grounds Walkthrough

If you’ve just started Doom The Dark Ages: Revelations, chances are the Proving Grounds chapter is your first real test. While the objectives seem straightforward, a couple of sections—especially finding the Blue Skull and surviving the final encounter—can slow you down if you don’t know what the game expects.

The good news is that this chapter isn’t about complicated puzzles. It’s mostly teaching you mechanics that become important later, like using Flesh Nodes, Shield Charge, and Energy Nodes during combat and exploration.

This walkthrough takes you through every objective in order, explains what to do, and points out the mechanics the game is quietly trying to teach you along the way.

Proving Grounds Chapter Objectives

You’ll complete the following objectives during the mission:

  • Obtain the Oracle
  • Make your way to the Council Chamber
  • Find the Blue Skull
  • Open the Council Chamber
  • Confront the Council
  • Survive the Oracle’s Crypt
  • Defeat the Agaddon Brute Champion
  • Survive the Henchman encounter

Let’s go through each section one by one.

Obtain the Oracle

The chapter begins with a fairly calm introduction before throwing you into your first real combat scenario.

Simply follow the path until you reach the Oracle. There aren’t any hidden routes here, so just enjoy the opening sequence and get familiar with the controls if this is your first time playing.

Once you obtain the Oracle, the next objective appears immediately.

Make Your Way to the Council Chamber

This section is mostly linear.

Keep following the main path while defeating any enemies standing in your way. Don’t rush through every encounter. The game is still introducing enemy behavior, so it’s worth taking a few moments to practice parrying, dodging, and using your shield effectively.

Eventually you’ll arrive at the large locked Council Chamber.

Unfortunately, you can’t enter just yet.

The massive door requires the Blue Skull Key, so it’s time to hunt it down.

How to Find the Blue Skull

This is the first section where players tend to wander around wondering what they’re missing.

Thankfully, the solution is pretty simple once you know where to look.

Step 1: Find the first Flesh Node

Stand facing the locked Council Chamber door.

Turn to your right and look upward. You’ll notice a Flesh Node attached high above.

Use it to pull yourself across the gap.

Step 2: Reach the second Flesh Node

After landing, continue forward until you reach the large stone platform in the center of the area.

Climb onto it to access another Flesh Node positioned nearby.

Step 3: Use Shield Charge

Near the second Flesh Node you’ll spot a glowing green Shield Charge target.

Charge directly into it.

Doing this swings the Flesh Node toward another ledge, creating a path that wasn’t available before.

This is one of those mechanics that feels confusing the first time, but you’ll be using it regularly throughout the campaign.

Step 4: Cross back over

Drop back to ground level.

Now pull yourself across using the repositioned Flesh Node.

Climb over the nearby wall to continue.

Step 5: Clear the tunnel

You’ll enter a tunnel guarded by several larger enemies.

Take your time here.

The room is fairly tight, so staying mobile is much safer than standing still. Focus on one heavy enemy at a time while clearing out smaller threats whenever they get too close.

After defeating everyone, interact with the nearby lever.

Step 6: Pull the lever

Press the interaction button to pull the lever.

Doing this unlocks the Blue Skull, allowing you to finally claim the key.

Once you’ve picked it up, retrace your steps back toward the Council Chamber.

Open the Council Chamber

With the Blue Skull in your inventory, the previously locked door can now be opened.

Interact with the entrance to unlock the Council Chamber and continue deeper into the mission.

You’ll also be introduced to another important mechanic before the next major fight.

Understanding Energy Nodes

As you continue forward, the game introduces Energy Nodes.

These aren’t just decorative objects—they’re designed to keep combat moving instead of letting you hide behind cover.

Whenever you spot an Energy Node, make sure to interact with it or use it as intended.

Getting comfortable with these now makes later encounters significantly easier since several future arenas are built around this mechanic.

Think of this section as a safe practice session before the game starts combining every mechanic together.

Survive the Oracle’s Crypt

Once you enter the crypt, the pace changes immediately.

Multiple waves of demons begin spawning around the arena.

There’s no trick to this encounter—you simply need to survive until every enemy has been defeated.

A few tips that helped me during this fight:

  • Keep moving instead of fighting from one position.
  • Prioritize ranged enemies before focusing on larger targets.
  • Save your strongest attacks for elite demons instead of regular enemies.
  • Use the environment to avoid getting surrounded.

Once the final wave falls, you’ll move on to the chapter’s boss battle.

How to Defeat the Agaddon Brute Champion

The Agaddon Brute Champion serves as the first major boss of the chapter.

Compared to regular enemies, it hits much harder and has a much larger health pool, but its attacks are fairly easy to read once you’ve watched them a couple of times.

The biggest mistake is getting greedy.

Instead of constantly attacking, wait for the boss to finish its combo, avoid the heavy swings, then punish the opening before backing away again.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Stay mobile throughout the fight.
  • Dodge wide melee attacks rather than trying to tank them.
  • Attack during recovery animations.
  • Keep your distance whenever the boss begins winding up heavier attacks.

Once its health reaches zero, the fight ends and the story continues.

Confront the Council

After defeating the Agaddon Brute Champion, you’ll finally reach the High Council.

This is a story-heavy sequence, so sit back and enjoy the cutscene.

Without spoiling anything, the meeting doesn’t exactly go the way your character expected.

The chapter quickly shifts toward one final challenge.

How to Survive the Henchman Encounter

At first glance, it feels like you’re supposed to defeat the mysterious Henchman.

You’re not.

This is actually a scripted survival sequence.

No matter how much damage you deal, the Henchman is effectively invulnerable during this encounter.

Instead of wasting resources trying to kill it, focus entirely on staying alive.

Keep moving, avoid incoming attacks, and survive until the sequence naturally progresses.

Once enough time has passed, the story takes over and the encounter ends automatically.

If you’ve been wondering why your attacks don’t seem to do anything, don’t worry—you aren’t missing a secret strategy. The game simply doesn’t allow you to defeat the Henchman here.

Rewards for Completing Proving Grounds

Finishing the Proving Grounds chapter lets you:

  • Progress to the next chapter of Doom The Dark Ages: Revelations.
  • Learn core traversal mechanics like Flesh Nodes and Shield Charge.
  • Unlock and understand Energy Nodes for future combat encounters.
  • Defeat your first major boss, the Agaddon Brute Champion.
  • Advance one of the game’s biggest early story moments involving the High Council.

Once this mission is complete, you’ll have a solid understanding of the mechanics that the rest of the campaign builds upon, making the later chapters feel much more natural.
