The Face Card system in Black Jacket is one of the coolest mechanics in the game, but it can also be pretty confusing when you first start experimenting with it. The game gives small visual hints when certain cards interact with each other, but figuring out the exact order and outcomes still takes a lot of trial and error.
This guide explains every Face Card puzzle in simple terms, including the correct interaction paths, alternate outcomes, and what rewards you unlock for completing them properly. If you have been wondering why your cards suddenly change names, become bloody, or transform into completely different cards, this is where all of it starts making sense.
One important thing to know before starting is that the order you place two interacting cards does not matter. For example, placing the King next to the Queen works the same as placing the Queen next to the King. As long as the two cards interact, the result will trigger.
Completing the “correct” version of each puzzle unlocks a special artifact tied to that card set. These artifacts are extremely useful because they let you buy the entire Face Card set during future runs, which means you can build around upgraded self-improving cards much more consistently.
Black Jacket Face Card Puzzle Guide
At the beginning of each run, you choose a Face Card set to include in your deck. Initially, only The Royals are available, but additional sets unlock after defeating bosses multiple times.
Each group contains three special cards with hidden interactions. Playing them together in certain combinations changes the cards permanently for the rest of the run. Sometimes the transformations are beneficial, sometimes they are risky, and occasionally they completely alter how the cards behave.
The visual design does a surprisingly good job hinting at these interactions. If two cards are about to react with each other, you will often notice subtle changes in expressions or artwork before confirming the play.
Some interactions are simply side outcomes, while others are considered the “true” or “correct” path that unlocks achievements and artifacts.
The Royals Puzzle Guide
The Royals set contains:
- Queen
- King
- Jack
This is the first puzzle set most players encounter, and it acts as a good introduction to how Face Card transformations work.
Correct Puzzle Path
The key card here is Jack.
When you play Jack together with either the King or Queen, Jack murders that monarch. The monarch becomes Hollow, gains a second score of 0, and visually appears damaged and empty. Meanwhile, Jack transforms into The Murderer, becoming blood-soaked with altered artwork.
At this point, one monarch remains alive.
Now play the surviving monarch together with The Murderer. This triggers the execution sequence, where the remaining royal punishes Jack for the murder. Jack transforms into Hanged Jack, becoming Hollow and gaining additional score values of 5 and 0.
Successfully completing this chain unlocks:
- The Royals achievement
- The Royals artifact
The artifact is extremely useful because it gives you access to all three upgraded Face Cards in future runs.
Other Interactions
If you play the King and Queen together while both are still alive, the Queen empowers the King instead of harming him. The King gains an extra score and takes on a golden appearance.
This interaction is not part of the true puzzle path, but it is still useful if you want stronger value early in a run.
One really nice detail about The Royals set is how visually clear the transformations become. Even among other diamond cards, it becomes very easy to identify which version of each card you currently have.
The Vice Puzzle Guide
The Vice set contains:
- Morgan
- Virtue
- Vice
This puzzle line is much darker than The Royals and has several branching outcomes depending on who kills Virtue.
Correct Puzzle Path
Start by playing Morgan and Vice together.
They toast together, and Morgan gains the effect “Demand a card valued 8 or higher.” This marks the beginning of the corruption route.
Next, play Virtue together with Morgan.
Morgan kills Virtue during this interaction. Virtue transforms into a Hollow card with a 10/0 score and gains the effect that fills your remaining slots with -1 Heart cards.
Morgan herself transforms into Mania, gaining:
- 11/0 stats
- Raise 1
- Fill your slots with 1/0 Diamond cards
She also gains a visibly bloodied appearance.
Completing this sequence unlocks:
- The Vice achievement
- The Vice artifact
Other Interactions
If you play Morgan and Virtue together before interacting with Vice, Morgan instead becomes weaker emotionally rather than violent. She loses one point of score and gains Insight 2.
Interestingly, this does not lock you out of the correct path. You can still continue into the Mania transformation afterward.
You can even trigger the full puzzle in a single turn if you manage to play all three cards together correctly.
There is also a shortcut interaction where Vice kills Virtue directly. However, this does not create Mania, making it a less rewarding route overall.
The Shame Puzzle Guide
The Shame set contains:
- Ivel
- Ward
- Crowd
This puzzle has one of the strangest progression paths in the game because the transformations continue evolving across several interactions.
Correct Puzzle Path
Begin by playing Ward and Crowd together.
This causes Ward to become Outcast, gaining:
- 10/0 stats
- Shuffle 1 permanent Shame card into your deck
Meanwhile, Crowd changes into an upgraded version of itself that gains:
- Purge Shame
- Claim 2 per card purged
Next, play Ivel together with Crowd.
This interaction fills Ivel with regret and transforms him into a new version that decreases each broken card by 2.
Finally, play Ivel together with Outcast.
Outcast runs away permanently and becomes Gone, a card with -8 score and the ability to swap with the opposing slot.
When Gone swaps positions, it temporarily transforms into Vagabond.
Finding Vagabond is the final requirement for unlocking:
- The Shame achievement
- The Shame artifact
Other Interactions
If Ivel shames Ward before Crowd does, Ward still becomes depressed and transforms similarly.
If both Ivel and Crowd interact with Ward before the transformation completes, Ward becomes even more miserable and generates additional Shame cards.
This puzzle line feels especially thematic because every interaction slowly destroys the characters emotionally rather than instantly transforming them.
The Family Puzzle Guide
The Family set contains:
- Elisabeth
- Niv
- The Black Jacket
This is probably the most elaborate Face Card puzzle in the game because it requires multiple transformations before the final combination becomes possible.
Correct Puzzle Path
Start by playing The Black Jacket together with Elisabeth.
Elisabeth transforms into Broken, becoming:
- -10 score
- Break the opposing and adjacent cards
Next, play The Black Jacket together with Niv.
Niv transforms into Abandoned, becoming:
- -10 score
- Shuffle two Languish cards into the deck
Now comes the important step.
Play Broken and Abandoned together.
Broken transforms into Intervention, gaining:
- 10/0 stats
- Decrease opposing and adjacent cards by 2
Abandoned also transforms into another version of Intervention, gaining:
- 10/1 stats
- Put a Languish card on top of the opponent’s deck
Finally, place both Intervention cards around The Black Jacket at the same time.
All three combine into The Family, a powerful card with:
- 21/10/1 stats
Completing this final transformation unlocks:
- The Family achievement
- The Family artifact
This is one of the strongest rewards among all Face Card puzzles because the resulting card is absurdly powerful when built correctly.
Other Interactions
If you play Elisabeth and Niv together before involving The Black Jacket, Niv instead becomes Playtime!, which rotates all cards clockwise by two spaces.
Thankfully, this does not ruin the puzzle path. Playtime! can still be broken later by The Black Jacket and continue into the proper Family sequence.
