Soulmask 1.0 Beginner Guide (Shifting Sands) – Masks

Getting into Soulmask for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially with the 1.0 release and the Shifting Sands content adding even more systems on top. Between masks, tribe management, combat depth, and now airships, there’s a lot happening right from the start.

If you understand a few key mechanics early, you’ll avoid a lot of wasted time and progress much faster. These are the things that actually matter when you’re starting fresh.

Soulmask 1.0 Beginner Guide (Shifting Sands)

Before you even start playing Soulmask, the game asks you what kind of experience you want.

There are three modes:

  • Tribe Mode – More about managing your settlement and defending it. Think base-building with waves of enemies.
  • Survival Mode – The default experience. Balanced between exploration, crafting, combat, and base management.
  • Warrior Mode – Focused on combat. Less survival, more action—good if you like Souls-style gameplay.

If you’re unsure, just go with Survival Mode. It gives you the full experience without locking you into one playstyle.

Masks

The mask system is what makes this game different from other survival games.

In Shifting Sands, you start with Celestial Wings, which:

  • Lets you fly
  • Makes exploration way easier
  • Gives some light combat buffs

Always keep your mask active when going into dangerous areas—it’s basically free power.

Later on, you can:

  • Switch masks on the fly
  • Use different masks for different situations

But one thing you need to remember:
Masks require energy and maintenance, so you can’t just spam them forever.

Awareness Strength

This is basically your overall progression system.

Awareness Strength controls:

  • What tech you can unlock
  • What mask upgrades you can use

You gain it from literally everything:

  • Fighting
  • Crafting
  • Gathering
  • Building

So don’t overthink it—just play the game and it goes up naturally.

Skip System

If the guide in the top-left tells you to do something annoying or unclear:

You can press Page Down and skip it.

Don’t spam skip everything, but it’s useful when:

  • Something feels bugged
  • You already understand what to do
  • It’s just wasting time

Tribe Members

This is one of the biggest mechanics in the game.

You can recruit NPCs to:

  • Fight with you
  • Gather resources
  • Craft items

Basically, they remove a lot of grind.

How to Use Them Properly

Every tribesman has:

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Personality traits

So don’t treat them all the same.

Examples:

  • Good at logging → assign to wood
  • Good at mining → send to ore
  • Good at combat → bring with you

You can check everything in the Clan/Tribe tab.

Important Trick

If your workers aren’t gathering properly:

  • Open map
  • Place a marker where resources are
  • Assign them to that location

If the marker is wrong, they won’t work properly.
Simple fix, but a lot of people get stuck here.

Combat + AFK Farming Trick

You can bring tribesmen into combat and:

  • Let them fight for you
  • Still gain Awareness Strength

So yes, you can semi-AFK farm enemies.

Just make sure they have:

  • Weapons
  • Armor
  • Food & water
  • Bandages

Otherwise they’ll die and you lose everything.

You Can Control Tribe Members

You can actually play as your tribesmen.

This lets you:

  • Level them manually
  • Improve their skills faster

It’s a really cool system and worth using.

Weapons & Combat Basics

There are multiple weapon types, and each one levels up as you use it.

You unlock:

  • Passive bonuses
  • New abilities

Try different weapons early and pick what feels best.

Simple Recommendation

Spear is very strong because:

  • Heavy attack hits multiple times
  • Good for groups
  • High damage

But still—test everything.

Combat Mechanics You Should Use

  • Light attack
  • Heavy attack
  • Leap attack
  • Backstab
  • Execute

Also:

  • Dodge (very strong, forgiving timing)
  • Parry (leads to executions)

Parrying is especially powerful and easier than most Souls games.

Masks Later in the Game

As you progress, you unlock more masks.

Examples:

  • Sobek Mask
    • Better in water
    • More mobility
    • Damage resistance
  • Anubis Mask
    • Can raise dead enemies
    • Basically lets you build an army mid-fight

You’ll want to switch masks depending on the situation.

Upgrading Masks

To improve masks, you need:

  • Awareness Strength
  • Crystals (from chests / exploration / bosses)

Exploration is key here—don’t skip it.

Mask Energy

Masks don’t run forever.

You need items like:

  • Sunstones

These:

  • Restore mask energy
  • Are found in chests

Always carry them, especially if you’re flying long distances.

Running out mid-air = bad idea.

Airships = Mobile Base

In Shifting Sands, airships are a game-changer.

You should build one early and make it big.

Use it as:

  • A mobile base
  • Storage
  • Crafting hub
  • Respawn point (campfire)

Instead of running back and forth across the map,
you just bring your base with you.

Advanced Airship Tips

Later on, you can:

  • Build multiple ships
  • Create specialized ships:
    • Combat ship
    • Storage ship
    • Exploration ship

You can even:

  • Attach smaller ships to a main ship
  • Detach them to scout
  • Reattach and move everything together

This system is honestly one of the coolest parts of the game.

Soulmask looks like a normal survival game at first, but it’s way deeper than that.

Between:

  • Masks
  • Tribe management
  • Combat system
  • Airships

There’s a lot going on, and experimenting is a big part of the fun.
