Getting Started
Your journey begins by creating an Office.
When making a new Office, you can optionally add modifiers, although beginners are better off leaving them disabled until they understand the game’s mechanics.
Next comes character creation, where you’ll:

- Select an Origin
- Pick positive and negative traits
- Finalize your Office
Once finished, simply join an unlocked server and begin your adventure.
If you’re playing with friends, they can join your Office as members and progress together.

TC Corp
A fantastic choice for players who mostly play with friends.
Its bonuses are focused on teamwork and multiplayer synergy, making group missions much easier.
KC Corp
Probably the safest option for completely new players.
It provides a stronger early-game experience and helps smooth out the first few hours while you’re still learning combat.
JC Corp
Ideal if your goal is dealing as much damage as possible.

Learn the Combat Tutorial First

Dodging is Extremely Important
Good dodging is one of the fastest ways to improve.
Whenever you perform a successful dodge:
- A blue flash appears.
- You recover 2 Sanity.
Successful players rely on dodges far more often than blocking.
Another useful feature is that dodges can be chained repeatedly until you fail one.
Once a dodge is missed, the cooldown begins.
Mastering dodge timing is one of the biggest skill gaps in Purgatorio.
Evasive Moves
When stunned, pressing B activates an evasive escape.

What Happens at Low Sanity?
Low Sanity weakens your character considerably.
You’ll deal less damage, struggle to win clashes, and risk entering Panic, making fights much harder than they need to be.
For that reason alone, treating Sanity like a health bar is a good habit.
Coin Flip Mechanics
Every damaging attack triggers a hidden coin flip.
Winning that coin flip strengthens the attack’s effect.
Your Sanity directly affects these odds.
At 0 Sanity, your chance of winning the coin flip is simply 50%.
As your Sanity increases, your chances improve accordingly.
This is another reason experienced players constantly prioritize maintaining high Sanity.
Spend Your Skill Points
As you level up, you’ll unlock Skill Points.
These should be invested into your Skill Tree to unlock useful perks that strengthen your build.

Office Progression
Your character isn’t the only thing becoming stronger.
Your Office also has its own progression system.
Improving your Office lets you:

How Permanent Death Works
Hearing “permadeath” usually scares new players, but Purgatorio handles it differently.
You won’t instantly lose your character after dying once.
Instead, your Office and character are only wiped if you fail to pay taxes four separate times.
Because of this, permanent death is much more forgiving than many hardcore RPGs.
As long as you manage your finances and continue completing missions, you’ll rarely have to worry about losing everything.
