Mortal Shell 2 Best Weapon Tier List (August 2026)

Choosing the right weapon in Mortal Shell 2 can make a noticeable difference, especially once you start reaching harder areas and experimenting with Tarstone combinations. While every weapon has its own strengths, some are simply easier to build around and get more consistent results from.

For the current early-access meta, Axe and Dagger and Axatana stand above the rest. Both have fast multi-hit attacks, strong damage, and excellent synergy with powerful Tarstones. They also generate Resolve efficiently, which makes them much easier to build around for longer fights.

That does not mean the lower-ranked weapons are bad. Mortal Shell 2 gives every weapon enough tools to clear the game’s content when you build and play around its strengths. The rankings below are mainly about overall performance, consistency, versatility, and how much effort is required to get the weapon performing at its best.

Mortal Shell 2 Best Weapon Tier List (August 2026)

Tier Weapons
S Tier Axe and Dagger, Axatana
A Tier Black Needle, Great Martyr’s Blade, The Iconoclast
B Tier Veteran’s Battle Axe, Clockwork Scythe
C Tier Obsidian Hammer

The current top picks are Axe and Dagger and Axatana.

Their combination of fast attacks, high damage, multiple hits, and strong Tarstone compatibility gives them an advantage when dealing with both normal enemies and bosses.

S Tier Weapons

S Tier weapons are the easiest choices if you want a weapon that can perform extremely well without requiring a very specialized setup.

Axe and Dagger

Damage: ★★★★★
Versatility: ★★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★★

Axe and Dagger is currently one of the strongest weapons in Mortal Shell 2 and the easiest recommendation if you simply want something that performs consistently.

Its biggest advantage is the combination of fast multi-hit combos and access to both Arbiter’s Prize and Duality Stone.

That combination gives the weapon an unusually strong Tarstone setup.

Arbiter’s Prize allows the weapon to use Bloodcurse, which provides another source of damage during your attacks. Duality Stone can make the weapon’s attacks hit twice, giving you more damage while also helping with Resolve generation.

That last part is particularly important.

A weapon that attacks quickly and generates Resolve efficiently can keep using abilities more frequently. You are not simply getting more damage from each combo; you are also improving the resource loop that powers your build.

The fast attacks also make Axe and Dagger relatively forgiving compared to slower weapons. You can get in several hits without committing to the extremely long animations found on some heavier weapons.

For players who are still learning the game, this is probably the safest S Tier recommendation.

Why it ranks S Tier:

  • Extremely fast attack speed
  • Excellent multi-hit combos
  • High overall damage
  • Excellent Resolve generation
  • Access to Duality Stone
  • Access to Arbiter’s Prize
  • Strong against both normal enemies and bosses
  • Relatively easy to use

If you want a weapon that can comfortably carry you through difficult content, Axe and Dagger is hard to overlook.

Axatana

Damage: ★★★★
Versatility: ★★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★★

Axatana occupies the other S Tier position and has a playstyle that feels very similar to Axe and Dagger.

Its major strength is its fast multi-hit Light Attack combo.

This gives it excellent sustained damage and makes it particularly effective when combined with Tarstones that reward repeated attacks.

The biggest reason it reaches S Tier is Duality Stone.

Axatana is one of the few weapons capable of using Duality Stone, allowing its Light Attack combo to benefit from additional hits.

That means more damage and more opportunities to generate Resolve.

Axatana also works extremely well with Critical-focused builds.

For example, Lazlo’s recommended setup uses Axatana with Critical Hit bonuses and Heat-based Shell abilities. When all of those bonuses come together, the rapid attacks become extremely effective.

Why it ranks S Tier:

  • Very fast Light Attacks
  • Excellent multi-hit potential
  • Strong sustained DPS
  • Excellent Resolve generation
  • Access to Duality Stone
  • Works well with Critical builds
  • Strong against bosses and regular enemies
  • Relatively easy to learn

If you enjoy aggressive melee combat and constantly staying on top of enemies, Axatana is one of the best weapons available.

A Tier Weapons

A Tier weapons are still excellent choices.

They may lack the raw efficiency or Tarstone compatibility of the S Tier weapons, but they have specific strengths that can make them preferable depending on your Shell and playstyle.

Black Needle

Damage: ★★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★★

The Black Needle is a very comfortable weapon to use because it combines good reach, respectable damage, relatively fast Light Attacks, and a useful gap closer.

Its reach is particularly valuable when fighting enemies that punish close-range mistakes.

One of its practical advantages is that it provides a relatively safe way to regain your Shell after being severed.

That makes it a dependable weapon for players who are still getting accustomed to Mortal Shell 2’s combat.

The main reason it does not reach S Tier is its more limited Tarstone options.

The weapon itself is solid, but it does not have the same build-defining Tarstone combinations available to weapons such as Axe and Dagger or Axatana.

Why it ranks A Tier:

  • Good reach
  • Good damage
  • Useful gap closer
  • Fairly fast attacks
  • Safe and comfortable moveset
  • Reliable during exploration
  • More limited Tarstone compatibility

Black Needle is a particularly good choice if you value safety and reach more than maximum DPS.

Great Martyr’s Blade

Damage: ★★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★

The Great Martyr’s Blade is the weapon to consider if you enjoy slower attacks that hit extremely hard.

Its biggest advantage is its charged Light Attack, which is the strongest charged Light Attack among the weapons in this tier list.

It also has good range, high base damage, and useful AoE swings.

The problem is speed.

The Great Martyr’s Blade is much less forgiving than Axe and Dagger or Axatana. Its slower animations mean you need to understand enemy attack patterns and commit to attacks at the correct moments.

When you do, the damage is excellent.

When you don’t, enemies have plenty of time to punish you.

Why it ranks A Tier:

  • Extremely strong charged Light Attack
  • High base damage
  • Good reach
  • Good AoE
  • Strong against openings
  • Slower attack animations
  • Requires more precise timing

This is a weapon I would recommend more to experienced players than beginners.

The Iconoclast

Damage: ★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★★

The Iconoclast is an interesting weapon because it is one of the first weapons you get, yet it remains completely viable later in the game.

It has a balanced moveset with decent range, good damage, and relatively fast attacks.

It also works with several Infusion Tarstones, giving you room to customize its damage.

The Iconoclast does not have the raw output of the S Tier weapons, but that does not make it weak.

In fact, Eredrim’s recommended build uses The Iconoclast alongside Forgotten Crossbow because its reliable attacks work extremely well with a Break-focused setup.

That is a good example of why tier lists should not be treated as absolute rankings.

A weapon can be A Tier overall but become extremely effective when paired with the right Shell and Tarstones.

Why it ranks A Tier:

  • Available very early
  • Good range
  • Good damage
  • Fast enough attacks
  • Good Infusion compatibility
  • Easy to understand
  • Remains useful throughout the game

If The Iconoclast is your favorite weapon, there is no reason to abandon it simply because other weapons are ranked higher.

B Tier Weapons

B Tier weapons are usable and can still clear content, but they require more careful play or have limitations that make them less consistent than the higher-ranked options.

Veteran’s Battle Axe

Damage: ★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★

The Veteran’s Battle Axe has good damage and useful AoE on both its Light and Heavy attacks.

Its problem is the speed of those attacks.

The slower animations make it easier for enemies to punish you if you attack at the wrong time.

This is particularly noticeable against aggressive bosses that do not give you much room to recover after committing to an attack.

The weapon can still perform well if you learn its timing, but it does not have the same level of flexibility as the S Tier weapons.

Why it ranks B Tier:

  • Good damage
  • Good AoE
  • Useful Light and Heavy attacks
  • Slow animations
  • Easier to punish
  • Requires better timing

If you enjoy heavy weapons, the Battle Axe can still be a fun choice. Just expect to play more deliberately.

Clockwork Scythe

Damage: ★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★★

The Clockwork Scythe is at its best when you are exploring the overworld and dealing with groups of enemies.

Its main advantage is its AoE clear.

When several enemies are around you, the Scythe’s attacks can cover a useful area and make normal encounters easier to manage.

Its weakness becomes more obvious during boss fights.

It does not have the same combination of reach and attack speed that some of the higher-ranked weapons offer, making it harder to maintain consistent pressure against bosses.

Why it ranks B Tier:

  • Strong AoE
  • Good for exploration
  • Useful against groups
  • Less effective against bosses
  • Lower overall versatility
  • Does not match the attack speed of top weapons

It is a weapon that performs well in its preferred environment rather than one that excels everywhere.

C Tier Weapon

C Tier does not mean unusable.

It means the weapon has more noticeable weaknesses that make it harder to get the same results that you can achieve with the higher-ranked options.

Obsidian Hammer

Damage: ★★★
Versatility: ★★★
Ease of Use: ★★

The Obsidian Hammer has impressive individual hits, but its biggest problem is its extremely slow moveset.

It has some of the slowest attacks among the weapons currently available.

That gives the weapon a strange situation where its base damage can look impressive, but its overall DPS does not keep up with weapons that can attack several times during the same period.

The slow animations also make mistakes more expensive.

Against enemies that move quickly or bosses with short attack windows, you may find yourself waiting too long for an opportunity to safely commit to an attack.

Why it ranks C Tier:

  • High individual hit damage
  • Extremely slow attacks
  • Lower overall DPS
  • Difficult to use efficiently
  • Easier to punish
  • Requires a specialized playstyle

The Obsidian Hammer is still viable if you genuinely enjoy its heavy-hit playstyle. It simply requires considerably more effort to achieve the same consistency as the faster weapons.

Weapon Tier List Criteria

The rankings are based on three major factors.

Damage Output

Damage Output looks at how much damage a weapon can consistently produce across its upgrade levels.

This is not simply about the weapon’s biggest individual hit.

A weapon that hits for enormous damage once but takes a long time to attack again may have lower practical DPS than a weapon that hits for slightly less damage but attacks several times in the same period.

That is why fast weapons such as Axe and Dagger and Axatana perform so well.

Versatility

Versatility considers how well a weapon handles different situations.

A versatile weapon should be able to perform against both regular enemies and bosses without requiring an entirely different setup.

Weapons with useful reach, fast attacks, AoE options, and strong Tarstone compatibility generally score better here.

Ease of Use

Ease of Use takes into account things such as:

  • Attack speed
  • Attack range
  • Hit count
  • Animation commitment
  • How easily attacks can be punished
  • How simple it is to maintain consistent damage

This is one of the biggest differences between the top and bottom of the list.

A weapon can have excellent damage but still rank lower if landing that damage requires extremely precise timing.

What the Weapon Tiers Mean

S Tier

S Tier weapons are consistently powerful and relatively easy to optimize.

They benefit from strong Tarstones, fast attack patterns, and movesets that work well in a wide range of encounters.

These are the weapons I would recommend if you are looking for the strongest general-purpose option.

A Tier

A Tier weapons are still completely viable for late-game content.

They may require more skill, have slower attacks, or lack some of the Tarstone combinations that push S Tier weapons ahead.

That does not mean they are weak.

A well-built A Tier weapon can absolutely outperform an S Tier weapon when it is being used by someone who understands its moveset better.

B Tier

B Tier weapons have noticeable limitations.

They generally have specific situations where they perform very well but struggle to match the consistency of the higher tiers.

Slower attacks are the biggest issue for several B Tier options.

C Tier

C Tier weapons can still clear content, but they generally need a more specialized playstyle.

Their weaknesses in DPS, speed, or ease of use become more noticeable as the game gets harder.

They are better suited to players who specifically enjoy the weapon rather than players looking for the easiest path through difficult content.

Which Weapon Should Beginners Use?

If you are completely new to Mortal Shell 2, Axe and Dagger is the easiest recommendation.

Its fast attacks are forgiving, it has excellent damage, and Duality Stone gives it an extremely useful upgrade path.

You can attack quickly, recover Resolve efficiently, and spend that Resolve on your Shell abilities without having to wait through long attack animations.

Axatana is another excellent beginner-friendly option if you prefer a more aggressive and fluid moveset.

If you want something slower and heavier, Great Martyr’s Blade is worth learning, but you will need to pay more attention to enemy attack patterns.

The Iconoclast is also a perfectly good choice if you are still early in the game. You do not need to rush toward an S Tier weapon just because it is ranked higher.

Do Not Ignore Weapon Compatibility

One of the biggest mistakes when looking at a weapon tier list is assuming the ranking tells you exactly which weapon you should use.

Your Shell matters.

Your Tarstones matter.

Your preferred combat style matters.

For example, Eredrim’s build uses The Iconoclast despite it being below Axe and Dagger and Axatana in the general ranking.

That is because The Iconoclast fits Eredrim’s Break-focused playstyle extremely well.

Likewise, Axatana becomes even more effective on a Shell such as Lazlo, where rapid attacks, Critical Hit Chance, Heat, and Resolve generation all work together.

The best weapon for your character is often the weapon that fits your build rather than the weapon with the highest letter grade.

Prioritize Your Favorite Weapon

The tier list should be treated as a guide rather than a rule.

Every weapon has enough strengths to clear the game’s content when paired with the right Shell, Tarstones, and playstyle.

If you love the Obsidian Hammer, there is no reason to stop using it just because it is placed in C Tier.

You will generally perform better with a weapon you understand than with an S Tier weapon whose timing you constantly struggle with.

The same applies to the slower weapons.

Once you learn their spacing and attack windows, their weaknesses become much less noticeable.
