To begin the new content, head to Rose Bay and speak with Veiler. This starts the investigation into the glowing mineral veins found throughout the five layers of Mariana’s Veil.
The update introduces five layer guardians:
- Ignis
- Glacius
- Luminous
- Tenibris
- Reasonous
You will need to complete their specialized mutation quests as you progress through the update.
The update also introduces the Crevice Wall, wall riddles, an abyss gate, layer gems, and eventually access to the Obsidian Trench.
The important part for the rod is that you need to work through these new quests before you can reach the final progression.
Complete the Five Guardian Quests
Each area has its own fishing objective. You are given a particular rod and need to catch specific fish, sometimes with particular mutations or catching requirements.
Completing these quests rewards you with special gauntlets, which are useful throughout the new content.
Ignis – Volcanic Vent
The first objective takes you to the volcanic area, where you need to satisfy Ignis.
You are given the Volcanic Rod and need to perfectly catch two Ashen Fortune Charred fish.
This part can be annoying because the required fish aren’t necessarily quick to obtain. The volcanic environment also makes positioning important, since falling into the lava can interrupt your progress.
Once you complete the objective, you receive the Volcanic Gauntlets.
The gauntlets provide the slash effect mentioned during the quest, making them useful for the later progression.
Glacius – Frost Area
Next, move to the area associated with Glacius.
For this quest, you use the Challenger’s Rod and work toward the required frost-related catch. The required fish has a chance associated with it, so you may need several attempts before getting what the quest wants.
The quest can also involve a mutation requirement, so don’t be surprised if a normal catch doesn’t count.
After completing it, you receive the Challenger’s Gauntlets.
Luminous – Prism Area
The next section uses the Rod of the Zenith.
This quest has another specific fishing requirement, including the necessary mutation. Some catches can be particularly annoying because you may get the correct fish without the required mutation.
The useful part is that mutation-related consumables can help with some of these catches. In the guide, a Glitch Potion was used successfully for the required catch.
Once you finish the objective, you receive the corresponding gauntlets and can continue.
Tenibris – Aerial Prism Area
The following quest takes you to another layer and requires the Aerial Prism Rod.
This section has another special catch requirement. Some fish have relatively low chances of appearing with the needed conditions, so expect to make several casts.
After obtaining the required catches, you receive the Palm Gauntlet.
Reasonous – Leviathan Fang Area
The final guardian quest uses the Leviathan Fang Rod.
For this section, the required fish can be caught using the appropriate bait and conditions. Some of these catches are designed to be perfect catches, so the fishing mini-game matters more than simply getting the fish onto your line.
Once you complete the final guardian objective, you can move on to the next part of the progression.
Enter the Abyss and Unlock the Next Area
After completing the guardian quests, return and continue the progression toward the abyss.
At this point, you will encounter the new wall and layer-gem mechanics.
One of the important objectives involves taking the Ethereal Prism Rod and catching the required fish with the Prism mutation.
You then present the catch to the appropriate threshold.
Once the required condition is satisfied, the layer crystal can be activated and the path forward opens.
Deal With the 90% Stat Suppression
Once you enter the deeper section, you will encounter a major mechanic that can make the fishing considerably harder.
A 90% suppression can reduce your raw stats dramatically.
The objective is to absorb the glowing crystals around the area to weaken the suppression.
So if your fishing bar suddenly feels incredibly small or your stats appear terrible, don’t panic. This is part of the encounter rather than your rod suddenly becoming weaker.
Keep collecting the glowing crystals and progressing through the area.
Complete the Abyss Fishing Encounter
The next major challenge introduces one of the update’s new fishing mini-games.
The fishing control becomes much more difficult than normal because the encounter can pull your control bar toward a black-hole-like area.
The important thing I noticed here is that you need to pay attention to where the control bar is being dragged rather than simply trying to keep it centered.
The black hole can actively pull you toward it, making the catch much harder.
You may also need to deliberately interact with the dangerous area to remove certain effects during the encounter.
This is one of the most unusual fishing mechanics added in the update, so don’t be surprised if your first few attempts fail.
Use the Right Fish for the Mini-Game
Some fish are considerably easier to use during this encounter.
For example, Halibut can make the mini-game easier because its movement is more manageable.
The general idea is to keep control of the fish while dealing with the pulling effect and the changing control bar.
If you lose too much progress, don’t immediately give up. You can recover depending on how much control you have left.
Once you successfully complete the required catch, you can continue deeper into the Obsidian Trench.
Reach the Obsidian Trench
After completing the abyss progression, you will eventually reach the Obsidian Trench.
This is the area connected directly to the Chasm-Stalker Rod.
The update introduces new trench species and another unique fishing encounter here, so be prepared for another difficult catch before the rod becomes available.
The progression also leads into the new hunt system, where you may need to catch the required target multiple times.
Complete the Obsidian Trench Hunt
The trench hunt is another important part of the rod unlock.
The new encounter has a unique fishing mechanic, and the fish can interact with the control bar in ways that are different from normal fishing.
During the encounter, you need to manage your progress carefully while dealing with the unusual movement.
The new mini-game can feel difficult at first, but after a few attempts you start to understand how the movement works.
Once the required hunt is completed, the game finally gives you access to the rod purchase.
Buy the Chasm-Stalker Rod
After conquering the Obsidian Trench and completing the required progression, you can purchase the Chasm-Stalker Rod.

So make sure you have enough money before reaching the final step.

How the Chasm-Stalker Passive Works
The Chasm-Stalker Rod has a unique Catch Streak passive.
As you continue catching fish, the streak mechanic can trigger a special tornado effect.
When the tornado appears, it affects the fishing encounter by reducing the fish’s progress speed and pulling the fishing bar toward the tornado.
At first, this can actually feel like a disadvantage because controlling the bar becomes more difficult.
However, the passive has another purpose.
The higher your catch streak becomes, the more frequently the special effect can occur, and it can give you access to the new Obsidian mutation.
The Obsidian mutation is reportedly a 10× mutation, making it potentially very valuable when it activates.
This means the rod’s passive is designed around maintaining a long fishing streak rather than simply catching one fish and moving on.
Is the Chasm-Stalker Rod Worth Getting?
The Chasm-Stalker Rod has some impressive numbers, especially its 278% Luck, 80% Resilience, and infinite weight capacity.
However, the passive is a little more complicated.
You need to maintain a catch streak before getting the full benefit of the mechanic. The tornado can also make fishing more difficult because it affects the control bar and the fish’s progress.
So, personally, I would look at the rod as more of a specialized endgame rod rather than something that is automatically better than everything else.
The potential 10× Obsidian mutation is the biggest reason to experiment with it.
Don’t Confuse the Gauntlet Slashes With the Rod
One thing that can be confusing during the progression is the slash effect.
The slashes seen during the new content come from the gauntlets, not necessarily from the Chasm-Stalker Rod itself.
If you equip the gauntlets, you will see the slash effect during the relevant encounters.
So if you get the Chasm-Stalker Rod and don’t immediately see the same effect, don’t assume that your rod is bugged. The equipment pieces have their own effects.
Tips for Getting the Chasm-Stalker Rod Faster
If you want to make the grind less frustrating, I recommend preparing before starting the final progression.
Save Your Money
The rod costs 5 million, so don’t spend all of your money while working through the update.
Having the money ready means you can immediately purchase the rod once the Obsidian Trench progression is complete.
Bring Useful Fishing Consumables
Mutation and fishing-related consumables can make some of the required catches much easier.
A Glitch Potion, for example, can help with certain mutation requirements, although it won’t necessarily help with every special fishing mini-game.
Use Easier Fish for Difficult Mini-Games
If you’re struggling with the unusual control mechanics, try using fish with easier movement patterns.
Halibut was particularly manageable during the black-hole-style fishing encounter, making it easier to understand the mechanics.
Pay Attention to the Fishing Bar
The new mini-games aren’t simply about holding the bar over the fish.
Some encounters actively pull the bar in a specific direction, while others can alter your progress.
Once you understand what the mechanic is doing, the encounters become much less confusing.
Don’t Give Up After Losing Progress
Some of these encounters intentionally make you lose progress.
Instead of panicking when your progress drops, focus on recovering control and waiting for a better opportunity to move the bar.
This is especially important in the Obsidian Trench encounters.
The Chasm-Stalker Rod is one of the major rewards from the new Mariana’s Veil expansion, but getting it requires considerably more work than simply farming money.
You need to complete the guardian quests, collect the gauntlets, solve the new progression objectives, enter the abyss, deal with the stat suppression, complete the special fishing encounters, and finally conquer the Obsidian Trench.
Once you finish everything, you can spend 5 million C$ on the Chasm-Stalker Rod and start experimenting with its Catch Streak passive and the new Obsidian mutation.
I personally liked the new fishing mini-games because they make the update feel different from normal fishing. The rod itself is a little more questionable, but the 278% Luck, 80% Resilience, infinite Kg, and potential 10× Obsidian mutation definitely give you a reason to test it out.
