The Obsidian Trench has two of the rarest catches in its bestiary: Veiled Charybdis and Skolopendra. Both are tied to special fishing mechanics, so you cannot catch them like ordinary trench fish.
In this guide, I’ll explain exactly what you need for both catches, including their preferred bait and conditions, how to deal with Trench Suppression, and how the special minigames work.
You will also need to complete the Obsidian Trench progression before either fish becomes available. Once you catch enough Veiled Charybdis and awaken Skolopendra, you can complete the trench bestiary and unlock access to the Chasm-Stalker Rod.
How to Get Veiled Charybdis and Skolopendra in Fisch
Both catches have specific conditions that you should prepare for before heading into the trench.

Veiled Charybdis is the fish you need to focus on first. Skolopendra is locked behind the Charybdis awakening mechanic.
What to Bring to the Obsidian Trench
The special fishing encounters focus heavily on control and resilience rather than simply having the highest possible progress speed.
Before starting the hunt, try to bring:
- High Luck
- High Resilience
- Good Control
- Piercing or Slash
- Meteor or Stag Beetle bait
- Kraken Tentacle bait for Skolopendra
A rod with strong Luck can help you find Veiled Charybdis more consistently, while Resilience and Control become particularly important once the special minigames begin.
Unlock the Obsidian Trench
You cannot immediately travel into the Obsidian Trench and start fishing.
First, go to Roslit Bay and speak with Vaelor. He sends you to investigate the glowing mineral veins appearing throughout the five layers of Mariana’s Veil.
Each layer has a descendant with a specialized mutation quest.
The five descendants and their layers are:

Complete the required quests for all five descendants.
Afterward, descend into the abyss and locate the Crevice Wall. You will need to decipher its active riddle and activate the layer gems.
Once the gems are activated, the Abyss Gate opens and gives you access to the Obsidian Trench.
The progression also rewards you with the new Gauntlets, so make sure you complete the objectives rather than skipping through the area.
Manage Trench Suppression
Once you enter the Obsidian Trench, you will have to deal with Trench Suppression.
This environmental debuff builds up while you remain inside the area and can make long fishing sessions dangerous.
You cannot permanently remove the suppression, but you can temporarily reduce it.
Look around the trench for the glowing white crystals. Interacting with these crystals temporarily lowers your suppression level.
Before settling into a fishing spot, it is a good idea to locate the nearest crystal.
This becomes especially important when you’re attempting a long Veiled Charybdis or Skolopendra encounter. Starting a difficult catch while your suppression is already high can make the entire attempt much harder.
Complete the Other Trench Bestiary Entries
The Obsidian Trench has multiple species to discover, with Veiled Charybdis and Skolopendra acting as the two hidden catches.
Some of the regular species include:

- Cinder-Crust Gar
- Scoria Scorpionfish
- Shatter-Tooth Shark
- Magma-Glass Marlin
- Tectonic Toadfish
- Ash-Cloud Angelfish
- Shatterjaw Shark

It is worth completing these regular entries before focusing entirely on the two hidden catches.
Some species can also be obtained through the trench’s special harpoon minigame instead of normal rod fishing, which can make certain entries faster to complete.
How to Catch Veiled Charybdis
Veiled Charybdis is the first special catch you need to target.
Use the Correct Bait and Time
Equip either Meteor or Stag Beetle bait.
Then fish in the rivers inside the Obsidian Trench during the night cycle.
Because Veiled Charybdis is an Apex rarity fish, having high Luck is particularly useful.
You may need several casts before it appears, so don’t worry if it doesn’t bite immediately.
Learn the Charybdis Minigame
When Veiled Charybdis hooks, you won’t get the normal fishing bar.
Instead, a dedicated reeling minigame starts.
Your main goal is to maintain control while avoiding the hazards that appear during the encounter.
The minigame can pull your control around, so don’t expect it to behave like ordinary fishing.
Avoid the Blue Portals
Blue portals appear during the Charybdis encounter.
Try to stay away from them while controlling the fish.
Getting too close can make the encounter much harder and cause you to lose valuable progress.
Keep your attention on the control point and react to the portals as they appear.
Watch for Whirlpools
Whirlpools are another major hazard.
If you get caught in one, your rod control can be heavily affected, making it difficult to recover the catch.
The best approach is to react as soon as a whirlpool starts forming instead of waiting until it reaches your control point.
Veiled Charybdis can also reach extremely high weights, with catches going well beyond one million kilograms, so don’t be surprised by the huge weight number after landing one.
How to Awaken Skolopendra
You cannot simply cast for Skolopendra whenever you want.
First, you need to catch multiple Veiled Charybdis.
The awakening trigger occurs somewhere between four and six Charybdis catches, with the fifth catch being a common point for the awakening.
So your main goal is to keep returning to the trench rivers and catching Charybdis until the awakening event activates.
Look for the Red Crystals
The easiest way to know that Skolopendra is ready is to watch the crystals around the trench.
When the awakening triggers, the crystals change into a luminous deep-red colour.
You will also receive the message:
“The Skolopendra rises from the Obsidian Trench!”
Once you see this, the Skolopendra encounter has been activated.
Prepare for the Skolopendra Catch
After the awakening, switch your bait to Kraken Tentacle.
Skolopendra prefers:
- Kraken Tentacle bait
- Rain
- Foggy weather
Try to line up these conditions before attempting the catch so you aren’t wasting attempts with the wrong setup.
Complete the Skolopendra Hunt Minigame
Catching Skolopendra starts another special minigame called the Skolopendra Hunt.
This is different from both ordinary fishing and the Veiled Charybdis encounter.
The biggest thing to understand is positioning.
Red warning areas appear around the sides of the minigame.
You need to keep your control point away from these dangerous areas.
Moving into the red zones causes your progress to decrease, so don’t focus only on chasing the fish.
Instead, keep your position under control and wait for safer opportunities to move.
Once the progress bar fills successfully, you will land Skolopendra.
Confirm the Skolopendra Catch
After successfully completing the hunt, you will see the notification:
“THE SKOLOPENDRA AWAKENS!”
You also receive the Obsidian Chunk Bobber.
If you have already registered the other Obsidian Trench species, catching Skolopendra will complete the trench bestiary at 100%.
You can also check your inventory afterward to confirm both Veiled Charybdis and Skolopendra, including their recorded weights and any mutations they received.
Unlock the Chasm-Stalker Rod
Catching Skolopendra has another important reward.
After defeating the encounter, the Chasm-Stalker Rod becomes available for purchase at the glowing crystal altar inside the Obsidian Trench.
The rod has strong stats and a unique streak-based passive that is exclusive to it.
It also introduces the Myriapodic mutation, which can appear on catches such as Myriapodic Basalt Behemoth.
So if you’re working toward the Chasm-Stalker Rod, catching Skolopendra is one of the most important steps in the entire Obsidian Trench progression.
Redeem the Mariana’s Veil Code

Enter it through the game’s code redemption system to claim the available update reward.
Keep in mind that Fisch codes can expire, so redeeming an active code as soon as possible is always a good idea.
If you’re going for both rare catches, I recommend completing the normal trench bestiary first and then focusing on the hidden encounters.
For Veiled Charybdis, use Meteor or Stag Beetle bait during the night and prioritize Luck, Control, and Resilience.
Once you’ve caught enough Charybdis, watch the trench crystals. When they turn deep red and the awakening message appears, switch to Kraken Tentacle and prepare for Skolopendra.
The two minigames require different approaches, so don’t treat them like normal fishing. Charybdis is mainly about managing the portals and whirlpools, while Skolopendra is focused heavily on keeping your control point away from the red danger zones.
Once Skolopendra is caught, you’ll have the Obsidian Trench bestiary completed and can move on to the Chasm-Stalker Rod.
