Once you’ve unlocked the Vanderboom Estate and signed the contract, things get busy pretty quickly. Day 1 throws several little jobs at you, and one of the first puzzles you’ll run into involves the giant chandelier inside the house.
Three candles are missing, and you need to track them down before you can light the chandelier and continue preparing the estate for the guests.
The good news is that the candles aren’t scattered across the entire map. Two require a little searching, while the third is handed to you as you work through the housekeeper’s tasks.
Here’s where to find all three candles and, more importantly, how to solve the chandelier puzzle once you have all six.
How to Get the Chandelier Candles in Servant of the Lake
The chandelier inside the estate starts with three candles missing.
You’ll need to find:
- Candle #1 in the kitchen
- Candle #2 by solving the painting code
- Candle #3 by completing the painting-cleaning task
Once you’ve collected them, you can return to the chandelier and solve the final candle arrangement puzzle.
Candle #1 Location
The first candle is probably the easiest one you’ll find.
Head back to the kitchen, the same place where you prepared Aldous’ porridge for breakfast.
Look at the table and you’ll see the candle sitting there.
Simply interact with it and add it to your inventory.
That’s it. No code, no hidden compartment, nothing sneaky this time.
Candle #2 Location
The second candle requires a little more work.
First, speak with the other housekeeper at the back of the estate. She’ll give you the job of dusting the paintings around the house.
While you’re doing this, pay attention to the numbers revealed by the paintings. You’ll need them for a nearby locked box.
There are three important paintings:
- Aldous’ painting: 4
- Alexandra’s painting: 2
- William’s painting: 3
Don’t worry about remembering anything complicated. You simply need these three numbers for the combination.
Where to Use the Painting Numbers
Head upstairs to the area outside Aldous’ room.
You may remember the cupboard here from an earlier interaction involving the rat and the cat. Open the cupboard again.
Inside, on the left side of the cabinet, you’ll find a small golden box.
Interact with it and enter the numbers:
2 → 4 → 3
The combination comes from the paintings:
- Alexandra = 2
- Aldous = 4
- William = 3
Once you enter 243, the box opens.
Inside is Candle #2.
Candle #3 Location
The third candle is actually much easier to obtain.
After you’ve finished dusting the paintings, return to the housekeeper who gave you the task.
Speak with her again.
She’ll give you Candle #3 as a reward for completing the job.
So if you’re wandering around the estate looking for the third candle, you aren’t missing some secret hiding place. Just finish the painting task and talk to the housekeeper again.
How to Solve the Candle Puzzle in Servant of the Lake
Now comes the part where all those candles finally become useful.
Return to the chandelier and place all three missing candles into their empty positions.
Once all six candles are on the chandelier, examine them carefully.
Each candle has a line pattern on it.
These lines aren’t decoration. They form one continuous route, and you need to arrange the candles so the lines connect correctly.
The easiest way to understand the puzzle is to imagine you’re creating a single path:
Start at the half-line → connect the candle lines → finish at the arrow pointing right.
The candle in the third position is the starting point of the sequence.
Correct Candle Order
If you don’t want to spend ages rotating candles and trying every possible combination, the correct order is:
3 → 1 → 4 → 2 → 6 → 5
Arrange the candles in that sequence and the lines will connect correctly.
Once you’ve placed them properly, use the matches you found while preparing Aldous’ porridge to light the candles.
The chandelier puzzle will then be completed.
What Happens After You Solve the Candle Puzzle?
With the chandelier lit, you’ve finished the final major task inside the estate for this part of Day 1.
You can return to the housekeeper and speak with her again.
This moves you on to the next set of duties, taking you outside into the garden as you continue getting the Vanderboom Estate ready for the guests.
Servant of the Lake Candle Locations: Quick Answer
If you’re already stuck and just want the locations and solutions:
Candle #1: Kitchen table.
Candle #2: Solve the golden box upstairs using 243.
Candle #3: Complete the painting-dusting task and speak to the housekeeper again.
Candle Puzzle: Arrange the candles in this order:
3 → 1 → 4 → 2 → 6 → 5
Then light them using the matches from the porridge preparation.
That’s all you need to get the chandelier working and move on with Day 1. And honestly, this is a good example of how Servant of the Lake likes to hide its solutions: the game usually gives you the information you need, but it expects you to notice that a seemingly unrelated detail—like the numbers on paintings—is actually the key to another puzzle.
