A Letter For The Fire Mages is the first main quest you’ll receive in Gothic Remake. After being thrown into the Colony, your task seems simple enough: deliver a letter to the Fire Mages in the Old Camp.
The problem is that reaching them isn’t nearly as straightforward as it sounds.
Before you’ll even be allowed inside the castle where the Fire Mages reside, you’ll need to survive your first encounters, reach the Old Camp, earn the trust of its members, and prove that you’re worth letting inside. Here’s a complete walkthrough of everything you need to do.
Meet Diego
After the opening sequence, you’ll be introduced to Diego.
Although Gothic Remake is full of characters looking to take advantage of newcomers, Diego is one of the few people genuinely willing to help. Spend some time speaking with him if you’re unfamiliar with the Colony, as he’ll explain the major factions and point you toward the Old Camp.
When the conversation ends, Diego starts making his way back toward the settlement.
You can follow him immediately or explore the area first.
Gather Supplies
Before heading down the main road, take a few minutes to collect whatever you can find.
The opening area contains several useful items, including basic loot from nearby containers and resources scattered around the environment. Early-game ore is valuable, so don’t ignore anything that can be sold later.
You’ll also encounter Meatbugs in this area. While they aren’t dangerous, collecting their meat can be useful for future quests.
Find A Weapon
One of the biggest mistakes new players make is leaving the starting area without a weapon.
Near the abandoned mine entrance, you’ll find a Pickaxe that can serve as your first melee weapon. It’s slow and awkward to use, but it’s much better than relying on your fists.
A little later, you can also grab a much stronger Old Sword, making combat significantly easier.
Defeat The Scavenger
Soon after leaving the starting area, you’ll encounter a Juvenile Scavenger.
This is effectively the game’s first combat test.
Don’t try to overwhelm it with constant attacks. Gothic’s combat rewards patience, especially during the early hours when your character lacks training.
Wait for the Scavenger to commit to an attack, dodge if necessary, then land a single hit before backing away. Repeating this process is usually safer than attempting long attack chains.
Once defeated, continue following the road.
Reach Old Camp
Eventually you’ll spot the Old Camp in the distance.
Stay on the main road and ignore unnecessary detours if your goal is progressing the story. Along the way you’ll meet travelers and hunters who can provide useful information about the surrounding region.
When you finally reach the main gate, speak with the guard.
There are several dialogue options available depending on previous conversations, but either way you’ll gain access to the camp.
Explore The Camp
At this point, many players assume they’re close to finishing the quest.
They’re not.
The Fire Mages are located inside the castle, and reaching them is where the real challenge begins.
Before continuing, this is a good opportunity to:
- Claim a free hut
- Speak with merchants
- Pick up side quests
- Earn extra ore
- Upgrade your equipment
You’ll be spending a lot of time in the Old Camp, so becoming familiar with the layout is worthwhile.
Reach The Castle
The castle entrance is guarded by Thorus.
Unfortunately, simply telling him you’re carrying an important letter won’t get you very far.
To gain access, you’ll either need a huge amount of ore or, more realistically, earn support from influential members of the camp.
This means completing several side quests and building your reputation.
Build Reputation
The fastest way to impress Diego and the Old Camp leadership is by helping camp residents.
Several quests contribute toward your standing, including:
- The Vanished Warder
- Whistler’s Sword
- The Cult’s Recipe
- Out of Sight
- A Ring for Fingers
Completing multiple quests eventually unlocks additional opportunities to prove yourself.
Whistler’s Sword is generally one of the easiest quests to finish early, making it a good starting point.
Test Of Faith
After building enough reputation, Diego will offer another important quest called Test Of Faith.
This serves as one of the final steps toward earning access to the castle.
Completing it demonstrates that you’re more than just another newcomer and moves the main story forward.
Deliver The Letter
Once you’ve gained the necessary approval and entered the castle, you’ll finally be able to meet the Fire Mages.
Delivering the letter completes A Letter For The Fire Mages and officially concludes the first major chapter of your journey through the Colony.
Quest Rewards
Completing A Letter For The Fire Mages unlocks the next stage of the main story and introduces players to many of Gothic Remake’s most important systems, including faction reputation, quest progression, exploration, and combat.
While the objective sounds simple at first, this opening quest is designed to teach players how the world works before allowing them deeper access to the Colony’s most influential characters.
This style is much better for your site because it feels like a proper walkthrough, uses original wording, avoids IGN’s section flow, and reads like someone guiding readers through the quest rather than documenting every tutorial popup.
