Starting Alabaster Dawn for the first time can honestly feel a little overwhelming. The game throws a lot of mechanics at you pretty quickly, and if you took a long break or are coming back after an update, it is easy to forget how some systems work. So I decided to put together a simple beginner guide covering the basics that actually matter while playing.
This is not meant to be a full wiki or deep min-max guide. Think of this more like a practical refresher that explains the important mechanics in a much easier way.
Also keep in mind the game is still in Early Access, so some systems will probably change over time.
Basic Controls
Keyboard & Mouse Controls
- Esc = Main Menu
- Tab = Map Menu
- R = Command Menu
- H = Weapon Wheel
- E / Left Click = Interact
- WASD = Movement
- Left Click = Melee Attack
- Right Click Hold = Aim
- Release Right Click = Shoot
- L = Lock Aim
- Shift = Divine Art
- Q = Switch Loadout
- 1 = Physis Element
- 2 = Aether Element
- 3 = Cryo Element
- 4 = Ignis Element
- F = Heal
- Z / X / C = Boost Movement
Once you play for a little while, these controls start feeling really smooth, especially movement and combat together.
Movement Guide
Movement in Alabaster Dawn is honestly one of the best parts of the game once you get used to it.
Long Jump
If you press dash right before reaching a ledge, Juno performs a long jump instead of a normal leap.
This becomes super useful while exploring larger areas or trying to keep momentum while moving through zones.
You can also aim during jumps which slows time slightly and makes ranged attacks easier to land.
Dash & Dodge
Pressing dash while moving gives you a quick directional dodge.
If you dash while standing still, Juno instead performs a backward dodge step.
Both use stamina, but they also give a short invulnerability window at the beginning, which helps a lot during boss fights.
Sprinting
After dashing, keep holding the dash button to charge into a sprint.
Once active, Juno automatically jumps across ledges which makes traversal feel much faster and smoother.
The sprint cancels if:
- You attack
- Interact with objects
- Get hit by enemies
Divine Sprint
If you keep holding dash longer, you will eventually see a blue light appear under Juno.
Release while moving to activate Divine Sprint.
This is basically an upgraded sprint that moves even faster and feels amazing once you unlock longer movement routes.
Combat Basics
Combat becomes much more enjoyable once you understand how the systems actually work together instead of just button mashing.
Melee Combos
Your standard melee combo is three hits long.
The final attack:
- Hits twice
- Acts as a finisher
- Can hit multiple enemies
Different weapons also have different attack patterns, so combat changes a lot depending on your setup.
Ranged Attacks
While aiming, releasing the ranged button fires your weapon.
You can actually fire shots very quickly without fully dropping aim if you get used to the timing.
Later on, some weapons unlock quickfire abilities that let you shoot instantly without aiming first.
Guard & Parry
Holding guard creates a defensive shield around Juno that reduces incoming damage and prevents knockback.
But the important mechanic is the parry system.
If you tap guard right before getting hit, shown by a blue flash effect, Juno performs a parry instead.
Parrying can:
- Reflect projectiles
- Increase enemy break gauge
- Create attack openings
Honestly, learning parry timing makes a huge difference against stronger enemies.
Swapping Loadouts
The loadout swap button changes both your melee and ranged weapons instantly.
This is really useful once you start experimenting with different weapon combinations for certain enemies or boss fights.
Elements Explained
You can switch between four main elements anytime during combat:
- Physis
- Aether
- Cryo
- Ignis
Different weapons and Divine Arts interact differently depending on the active element, so eventually you will want to experiment with combinations instead of sticking to just one.
Divine Arts
Divine Arts use SP and act like stronger special abilities.
A quick tap performs a Level 1 Divine Art instantly.
Holding the button charges stronger versions later on, although higher-level versions are still limited during Early Access.
Some Divine Arts are honestly really satisfying visually once you unlock stronger setups.
Cooking Guide
Cooking is way more important than it first looks.
At first I ignored it completely, but once you understand how the system works, it becomes one of the best ways to improve healing and buffs.
Cooking gives:
- Healing Bulbs
- Combat Buffs
- Better healing effects
- Stronger stat bonuses
Different dishes also give different effects depending on ingredients and spices used.
Palate Levels
Every food category has its own Palate Level.
Higher Palate Levels improve:
- Healing amount
- Healing bulb count
- Buff strength
So the more you cook and actually use dishes while fighting, the stronger they become.
Dish Types
The game separates food into categories like:
- Cooked
- Grilled
- Baked
- Cold
Each one levels independently.
How XP Works
Cooking a dish creates XP potential for that dish type.
Then while using the dish buffs:
- Fight enemies
- Gain XP
- Return to a Resting Spot
The earned XP gets stored and contributes toward leveling that dish category.
Cooking something for the first time also gives bonus progression.
Somu’s Dream Cooking Benefits
Cooking also helps inside Somu’s Dream.
You gain access to dishes you already unlocked outside the mode.
Even though healing bulb quantity is reduced there, the healing strength stays the same, so cooking progression still matters a lot.
Status Effects
There are a few important status conditions currently available.
Brittle
Brittle increases the damage enemies take and makes them vulnerable to more weapon hit types.
Example:
- Brittle 30% means enemies take 30% more damage
Drain
Drain lowers enemy damage output.
Example:
- Drain 30% means enemies deal 30% less damage
These effects become really useful during harder encounters.
Weapon Growth Skills
One thing I really like about the combat system is that weapons are not limited to simple basic combos.
As you unlock Growth Skills, weapons gain:
- Charged attacks
- Delayed combo finishers
- Alternate starters
- Extra attack routes
You can check these inside the weapon Growth Chart by hovering over the yellow skills.
Definitely experiment with them because some weapons feel completely different after unlocking extra attacks.
Understanding Stats & Modifiers
If you ever see terms like:
- Bullseye
- Breaker
- Modifiers
- Enchantments
you can actually inspect them using the Help feature inside menus.
Honestly, the Help system explains way more than most players realize, so it is worth checking whenever you see something confusing.
