Brotato Primal Dread Tier List 2026 – Best Characters

Brotato: Primal Dread brings a prehistoric jungle, 10 new characters, 17 weapons, 40 items, and the new Evolution mechanic to the game. With so many characters and build options, choosing the right potato can make a big difference—especially when you are trying to survive Danger 5.

In this Brotato Primal Dread Tier List guide, I’ll rank the strongest Brotato characters based on how consistently they can clear waves, how well they scale into the late game, and how forgiving their builds are. I’ll also explain what makes each top character powerful and which ones are better suited for beginners.

Keep in mind that Primal Dread and Update 1.2 have just arrived, so the new characters and balance changes still need more testing. This tier list focuses on reliable character strengths rather than pretending every new character has a settled, definitive ranking.

Brotato Primal Dread Tier List 2026 – Best Characters

This ranking focuses on solo Danger 5 runs with normal shop luck. A character’s tier can change depending on your weapon choices, items, and playstyle.

Tier Characters Why They Rank Here
S Tier Golem, King, Loud, Technomage, Cryptid, Creature Strong scaling, reliable survival, or powerful economy and damage loops
A Tier Engineer, Ranger, Crazy, Lucky, Mage, Entrepreneur, Diver, Fisherman, Dwarf, Artificer Strong builds with a clear plan, but usually need more specific items or careful play
B Tier Brawler, Knight, Chunky, Mutant, Wildling, Gladiator, Farmer, Cyborg, Arms Dealer, Saver, Beast Master Viable and enjoyable, but have noticeable weaknesses or less consistent scaling
C Tier Well Rounded, Speedy, Sick, Masochist, Pacifist, Generalist, Multitasker, One Armed, Ghost, Renegade, Vagabond, Demon Can win, but often require more precise builds or have difficult trade-offs
D Tier Wounded A challenge character with an extremely punishing survival condition

The tiers are a practical ranking, not an official in-game rating. The Primal Dread balance update also buffs several older characters, so their performance may differ from older guides.

S Tier – Best Brotato Characters

These characters are my strongest recommendations for players who want consistent runs and powerful scaling.

1. Golem – Best Defensive Character

Golem is one of the safest choices for high-Danger runs. It starts with +20 Max HP, and Max HP and Armor upgrades are 33% more effective. It also gains +40% Attack Speed and +20% Speed while below 50% health.

The major drawback is that Golem cannot heal. That sounds harsh, but its large health pool and improved Armor scaling help it survive without relying on healing items.

How I would build Golem:

  • Prioritize Max HP and Armor.
  • Use weapons that benefit from Melee Damage or Armor scaling.
  • Avoid taking unnecessary damage early, since healing is unavailable.
  • Treat the below-50%-health bonuses as a safety net, not a target.

Golem is especially good for players who prefer a sturdy character over a fragile damage build.

2. King – Best Late-Game Scaling

King rewards you for building around high-tier equipment. It starts with +50 Luck and gains +25% Damage and +25% Attack Speed for every Tier IV weapon it owns. It also gains +5 Max HP for every different Tier IV item.

The downside is that Tier I weapons and items impose penalties. King therefore benefits from upgrading equipment instead of filling the inventory with low-tier gear.

How I would build King:

  • Focus on upgrading a small number of weapons.
  • Save materials for valuable Tier IV items.
  • Avoid holding unnecessary Tier I equipment.
  • Use Luck to improve your chances of finding strong items.

King can feel slow at the start, but once its equipment improves, its bonuses become extremely powerful.

3. Loud – Best for Clearing Crowds

Loud increases the number of enemies that appear. More enemies mean more danger, but also more materials and opportunities to trigger effects that depend on kills.

This character is excellent when your damage can keep up with the larger crowds. Area damage, fast attacks, and reliable crowd control help turn the extra enemies into an advantage.

How I would build Loud:

  • Prioritize Damage and Attack Speed.
  • Use weapons that hit multiple enemies or clear groups quickly.
  • Add enough Armor and Max HP to survive the extra pressure.
  • Avoid builds that take too long to eliminate enemies.

Loud is powerful, but it is less forgiving if your damage falls behind.

4. Technomage – Best Elemental and Structure Synergy

Technomage is built around Elemental Damage and structures. Its character bonuses encourage an elemental playstyle, and its structure interactions can create a powerful damage loop as the run progresses.

How I would build Technomage:

  • Focus on Elemental Damage.
  • Use elemental weapons and items that improve burning or other elemental effects.
  • Build around structures when the shop offers useful options.
  • Add defensive stats before the later waves become overwhelming.

Technomage rewards players who understand how different damage sources work together.

5. Cryptid – Best Tree-Based Economy

Cryptid creates more trees and gains resources and healing benefits from keeping them alive. This gives it a different progression path from characters that rely entirely on killing enemies.

The challenge is protecting the trees while still dealing enough damage to survive. A build that clears enemies efficiently can turn Cryptid’s extra trees into a strong economy and sustain engine.

How I would build Cryptid:

  • Keep trees alive whenever possible.
  • Prioritize Dodge and defensive stats.
  • Use weapons that can protect your space without destroying every tree.
  • Collect the resources generated by surviving trees.

Cryptid is excellent when you balance survival, tree protection, and damage.

6. Creature – Best Curse Scaling

Creature benefits from Curse-based scaling and has a playstyle that becomes stronger as cursed enemies appear. Its power grows when you can take advantage of the extra rewards and effects tied to those enemies.

How I would build Creature:

  • Prioritize Curse and damage.
  • Use weapons that can deal with groups of enemies.
  • Keep enough defensive stats to survive stronger cursed opponents.
  • Take advantage of items that improve your Curse-focused build.

Creature is a strong choice for players who enjoy a more aggressive run with high scaling potential.

A Tier – Strong Characters With Specific Build Needs

These characters can clear Danger 5 reliably, but they usually need a more focused build or better shop choices.

Character Main Strength Build Focus
Engineer Strong structure damage Engineering, turrets, and structure support
Ranger Reliable ranged damage Ranged Damage, Attack Speed, and survival
Crazy Strong Precise weapon bonuses Crit Chance and fast Precise weapons
Lucky Luck improves drops and damage Luck, survivability, and reliable damage
Mage Powerful elemental effects Elemental Damage and burning
Entrepreneur Strong economy Harvesting and material management
Diver Damage and economy synergy Precise weapons and critical hits
Fisherman Bait-based scaling Harvesting and careful shop management
Dwarf Heavy melee scaling Max HP, Melee Damage, and heavy weapons
Artificer Strong explosions Explosion size and damage

Why These Characters Are A Tier

A-tier characters are not weak. They simply have more conditions to manage than the S-tier picks.

Engineer, for example, can become extremely powerful with turrets, but its early waves can feel slow. Ranger has excellent ranged scaling, but its reduced Max HP upgrade effectiveness makes defense important. Mage can clear crowds with elemental effects, but it needs the right weapons and items to get going.

If you already know how to build around a character’s strengths, several A-tier picks can perform just as well as S-tier characters in a good run.

B Tier – Good Characters With Noticeable Weaknesses

B-tier characters are playable and can win, but their strengths are less consistent or their weaknesses are harder to overcome.

Character What Makes Them Good Main Problem
Brawler Fast Unarmed attacks and Dodge Needs a plan for late-game damage
Knight Armor-based melee scaling Weapon and stat restrictions
Chunky High Max HP and health-based damage Can struggle to scale damage efficiently
Mutant Faster level-ups Needs strong choices to turn extra levels into power
Wildling Primitive weapon bonuses Less flexible weapon options
Gladiator Strong melee focus Needs time and equipment to come online
Farmer Excellent Harvesting scaling Can be vulnerable before the economy pays off
Cyborg Strong Ranged Damage and Engineering synergy Requires careful stat and weapon planning
Arms Dealer Cheap weapons and fast upgrades Less room for item purchases
Saver Materials can become damage Needs discipline with spending
Beast Master Pet-focused damage Less consistent than weapon-centered builds

These characters are worth playing, especially if you enjoy their mechanics. They just require more attention to their weaknesses.

C Tier – Challenging or Less Consistent Picks

C-tier characters can still win, but their mechanics often demand a specific approach.

  • Well Rounded: A balanced starting character, but lacks a powerful mechanic that carries the run.
  • Speedy: Converts movement into damage, but movement alone does not solve every late-game problem.
  • Sick: Has a unique health and damage interaction, but can be fragile.
  • Masochist: Can become stronger after taking damage, but surviving those hits is the challenge.
  • Pacifist: Rewards leaving enemies alive, which makes high-Danger runs difficult.
  • Generalist: Uses both melee and ranged weapons, but can struggle to maximize one damage path.
  • Multitasker: Can equip many weapons, but reduced weapon damage and higher costs complicate the build.
  • One Armed: Has massive Attack Speed, but only one weapon slot.
  • Ghost: Has exceptional Dodge potential, but low protection makes mistakes dangerous.
  • Renegade: Projectile-focused mechanics come with significant damage penalties.
  • Vagabond: Random stat gains make its progression less predictable.
  • Demon: Converts health into economy and power, but mistakes can quickly become fatal.

D Tier – Wounded

Wounded is designed as a challenge character. Its extremely low survivability means even a small mistake can end the run.

I would not recommend Wounded for players who are still learning enemy patterns or trying to complete their first Danger 5 run.

Primal Dread Characters – What to Know

Primal Dread adds 10 characters, alongside the new Jungle map, weapons, items, and the Evolution mechanic. The DLC’s character designs introduce different build directions, so I recommend testing them separately before treating their rankings as final.

A few new mechanics already stand out:

  • Time Shifter: Slows everything around you after taking damage, giving you a moment to reposition.
  • Veteran: Built around fighting large enemy groups while operating at low health.
  • Archeologist: Gains strength through crates found at dig sites.
  • Poacher: Becomes much stronger by killing enemies inside its hunting zone, but those kills provide less money.

These mechanics can be powerful, but the best ranking depends on how consistently each character survives the full 20-wave run and how well its build handles the Jungle’s new enemies.

Mecha vs. Mutation – Which Evolution Path Is Better?

Primal Dread introduces Evolution, which lets you lean toward Mecha or Mutation. Both paths have advantages, so I would choose based on the character and build rather than always selecting the same option.

Evolution Path Main Benefit Main Risk
Mecha Reinforces weapons and provides additional stats Mecha dinosaurs fire lasers and leave oil puddles
Mutation Can copy items and multiply their effects Mutant dinosaurs spread damaging acid

Mecha is a natural fit for weapon-focused builds that benefit from stronger attacks and extra stats. Mutation can be excellent when your build depends on powerful item effects, since copying a key item may significantly improve your run.

Neither path is automatically best for every character. Consider your current weapons, items, and defensive stats before committing.

How I Rank Brotato Characters

For this guide, I focus on four things:

  1. Consistency: Can the character survive and clear waves without needing perfect shop luck?
  2. Scaling: Does the character become stronger as the run progresses?
  3. Survivability: Can it handle elites, bosses, and crowded waves?
  4. Build flexibility: Can it adapt when the shop does not offer ideal items?

A character may have huge damage potential and still rank lower if it is too fragile or needs a very specific setup.

If you want a dependable character for Danger 5, I recommend starting with Golem, King, Loud, Technomage, Cryptid, or Creature. Each has a clear strength that can carry a run when you build around it.

Primal Dread adds plenty of new options, and the free Update 1.2 balance changes also improve several older characters. I’ll keep this tier list focused on practical performance and adjust the rankings as more runs establish which new characters are truly the strongest.
