After spending some time progressing through Dokkodo, you’ll eventually come across the Marking system. At first glance, it might seem like a small bonus system that gives a few extra stats, but that’s far from the truth. Some Markings can completely change how your build performs, especially once you start investing heavily into passives, stance upgrades, and Spirit progression.
The reason experienced players pay so much attention to Markings is simple: many of them scale directly with your existing upgrades. A bonus that makes all attack passives 20% stronger might not sound incredible early on, but once you’ve invested dozens of points into your build, the difference becomes very noticeable.
Some Markings are useful for leveling. Others are designed for farming. A few are tailored for PvP. Then there are the extremely rare Legendary Markings that almost every player dreams of obtaining.

Dokkodo Markings Guide – Buffs, Drop Rates, and Best Choices
Markings provide permanent character modifiers that affect various parts of gameplay.
Depending on the Marking you roll, you may receive bonuses such as:
- Increased Combat Experience gain
- Faster movement speed
- Better loot drops
- Stronger offensive passives
- Enhanced defensive upgrades
- Improved attack speed
- Better scaling from existing skills
However, not every Marking is purely beneficial.
Some come with tradeoffs. A Marking might make your attacks stronger while slightly reducing movement speed, or increase defensive effectiveness at the cost of offensive potential.
Because of this, the best Marking often depends on your build rather than simply picking the rarest one.
Common Markings
Common Markings are the easiest to obtain and have the highest drop rates.
While they aren’t as powerful as Rare or Legendary options, they’re still useful during early progression.
Jotaro’s Marking – The Young Shadow
Drop Rate: 31.5%
Effects
- +20% Combat Experience gain when training near other players
This is one of the better Common Markings for progression-focused players.
If you’re regularly training inside dojos alongside other players, the additional Combat Experience helps speed up stance progression considerably.
I wouldn’t consider it a long-term endgame choice, but it’s excellent during the early and mid-game grind.
Matahachi’s Marking – The Fleeing Coward
Drop Rate: 31.5%
Effects
- +25% sprint speed while out of combat
Simple but surprisingly useful.
Dokkodo involves a lot of traveling between settlements, training grounds, quest locations, and farming areas. Being able to move significantly faster outside of combat saves a surprising amount of time over hundreds of hours of gameplay.
It’s not a combat-focused Marking, but quality-of-life players often appreciate it.
Uncommon Markings
Uncommon Markings introduce stronger specialization bonuses and begin shaping your character around specific playstyles.
Denshichiro’s Marking – The Burdened Brother
Drop Rate: 10%
Effects
- Larger character build
- Slightly slower movement
- Attack power passives and upgrades become 20% more effective
This Marking is built for offensive players.
The movement penalty can be annoying, but the bonus scaling on attack-related upgrades becomes extremely valuable later in progression.
Warrior Spirit users will especially appreciate the additional offensive scaling.
Tsujikaze’s Marking – The Brigand
Drop Rate: 10%
Effects
- Executed enemies drop more loot
- Increased chance for rare drops
This is one of the best farming Markings currently available.
Players who spend most of their time hunting Ronins, farming materials, or collecting rare resources will get tremendous value from Tsujikaze’s Marking.
It’s not particularly strong for direct combat, but for long-term resource farming, few Markings can compete.
Ueda’s Marking – The Young Heir
Drop Rate: 10%
Effects
- Defense passives and upgrades become 20% more effective
The defensive counterpart to Denshichiro’s Marking.
Guardian players can gain tremendous value from this because many of their strongest passives revolve around posture resistance, defensive utility, and survivability.
If you’re building a tanky frontline character, this is a very strong option.
Rare Markings
Rare Markings are significantly harder to obtain but provide much stronger bonuses.
These often become long-term goals for players looking to optimize their builds.
Inshun’s Marking – The Shattered Prodigy
Drop Rate: 3%
Effects
- +10% Combat Experience gain
- Increased base movement speed
- Movement passives and upgrades become 25% more effective
This is one of the strongest all-around progression Markings in the game.
The Combat Experience bonus helps with progression while the movement enhancements improve both travel and combat mobility.
Coward players can become incredibly difficult to catch when combining their mobility passives with Inshun’s bonuses.
Even outside of Coward builds, this Marking remains extremely useful.
Seijuro’s Marking – The Fallen Prestige
Drop Rate: 3%
Effects
- Smaller character frame
- Attack speed passives and upgrades become 25% more effective
This is a PvP favorite.
The smaller hitbox profile already provides subtle advantages, but the real strength comes from enhanced attack speed scaling.
Faster attacks create stronger pressure, make combos smoother, and reduce reaction windows for opponents.
Katana players often benefit significantly from this Marking.
Legendary Markings
Legendary Markings are among the rarest rolls in Dokkodo.
With only a 0.5% drop chance, obtaining one is an achievement by itself.
These Markings provide some of the strongest bonuses currently available.
Musashi’s Marking – The Sword Saint
Drop Rate: 0.5%
Effects
- All passives and upgrades become 10% more effective
- Attack power passives and upgrades gain an additional 15% effectiveness
- Visible bloodthirst aura appears during combat
This is arguably one of the strongest offensive Markings in the game.
The universal 10% increase affects nearly everything in your build.
Then the additional offensive scaling pushes damage-focused characters even further.
Warrior builds become absolutely terrifying with this Marking.
Every offensive passive, every attack upgrade, and every damage increase scales even harder.
If your goal is maximum damage output, Musashi’s Marking is difficult to beat.
Kojiro’s Marking – The Silent Blade
Drop Rate: 0.5%
Effects
- All passives and upgrades become 10% more effective
- Defense and counterattack passives gain an additional 15% effectiveness
- Attack tells become harder for enemies to read
While Musashi dominates offensively, Kojiro excels defensively and technically.
The universal scaling remains extremely powerful, but the additional bonuses reward skilled players who rely on counters, deflects, and defensive play.
Guardian and Prodigy users can extract enormous value from this Marking.
The reduced readability of attacks also creates an unexpected PvP advantage because opponents have less time to react to your movements.
Markings are much more than small stat bonuses. They can dramatically influence how your character performs, especially once you begin investing heavily into Spirits, stance trees, and weapon upgrades. Common Markings help smooth out early progression, Rare Markings offer powerful specialization, and Legendary Markings provide some of the strongest build-defining bonuses currently available.
If you’re lucky enough to roll Musashi or Kojiro, you’ve essentially obtained one of the most desirable character enhancements in Dokkodo. Until then, don’t underestimate some of the lower-rarity options. Markings like Tsujikaze, Inshun, and Seijuro can remain useful even well into the late game depending on the type of character you’re building.
