The Colony isn’t exactly a welcoming place. Within your first hour in Gothic Remake, you’ll already be worrying about surviving combat, earning ore, and figuring out who can actually be trusted.
What many new players don’t realize is that you can claim your own place to sleep almost immediately after reaching the Old Camp.
Getting a free hut should be one of the first things you do after entering the settlement. Not only does it give you access to a bed, but it also provides a safe storage chest and a few useful items that can help during the early game.
Here’s how to find it.
Reach the Old Camp
Before you can claim a home, you’ll need to gain access to the Old Camp.
When you arrive at the main entrance, speak with the gate guard. Depending on your earlier conversations, there are a few ways to get inside, but the important thing is simply getting through the gate and entering the settlement.
Once you’re inside, don’t worry about the main quest immediately.
Your new home is only a short walk away.
Find Guy
From the entrance, head deeper into the camp and pass by Snaf, the camp cook.
Continue toward the area near the arena and follow the path leading uphill behind it. You’ll eventually reach a section filled with huts and workers.
Here you’ll find an NPC named Guy.
If you’re new to Gothic Remake, Guy is worth talking to anyway since he provides useful information about the major factions and life inside the Colony.
More importantly, he’s the person who tells you about an empty hut that’s available.
Claim the Hut
After speaking with Guy, he’ll point you toward a nearby shack that has recently become vacant.
The hut is easy to identify thanks to its large red awning.
Simply head inside and the place is effectively yours.
Unlike many player homes in RPGs, there’s no fee, quest requirement, or lengthy process involved. You can start using it immediately.
Use the Bed
Inside the hut you’ll find a bed that can be used to rest.
Sleeping is particularly useful during the early game because travelling around at night can be much more dangerous than exploring during daylight hours.
Resting also allows you to recover before heading back out into the wilderness.
Whenever you need to pass time or prepare for another adventure, this bed gives you a reliable place to do so.
Store Your Items
The chest inside the hut is arguably even more valuable than the bed.
As you explore Gothic Remake, your inventory quickly fills with weapons, ingredients, quest items, and valuables. Having a dedicated storage location makes managing all of those resources much easier.
It’s also a useful place to keep valuable ore and items that you don’t want to carry around everywhere.
Start The Forgotten Recipe
Many players don’t realize that the hut contains more than just a bed and storage.
Search the chest carefully and you’ll discover a note that starts The Forgotten Recipe side quest.
Since this is one of the earliest recipe-related quests available in the game, it’s worth picking up while you’re already there.
Free Food Nearby
Your new home also places you close to a few useful supplies.
Inside the hut you’ll find some food that can help with early healing. There are also additional food items available nearby for players willing to look around the surrounding structures.
During the opening hours, every bit of healing helps, making these free resources surprisingly valuable.
Cook Your Meat
Another advantage of settling near this area is the easy access to cooking pans.
If you’ve been collecting meat from creatures like Scavengers and Molerats during your travels, don’t sell it immediately.
Cooking meat improves its usefulness and generally makes it a much better healing resource than the raw version.
Whenever you’re passing through the Old Camp, it’s worth taking a moment to cook any meat you’ve collected.
Why the Hut Matters
At first glance, a free shack may not sound particularly exciting.
However, the combination of a bed, storage chest, nearby food, cooking facilities, and access to an additional side quest makes this one of the most useful early-game locations in Gothic Remake.
Many players rush straight into quests and exploration, but taking a few minutes to claim the hut first can make the opening hours significantly more comfortable.
The free hut in the Old Camp is one of the best early rewards available to new players because it requires almost no effort to obtain.
Simply reach the camp, speak with Guy, and claim the vacant shack with the red awning. From that point forward, you’ll have a safe place to sleep, store equipment, and prepare for the challenges waiting outside the camp walls.
For anyone just starting Gothic Remake, this should be near the top of your early-game checklist.
