Black Stars are basically the game’s real end-game layer. You can finish Berry Bury Berry without touching most of them, but if you’re going for full completion, lore unlocks, or just want to see everything hidden under the surface, you eventually have to hunt these down.
The tricky part is that almost none of them are straightforward. Most require specific upgrades, environmental changes, or weird puzzle logic that the game barely explains. Some even depend on earlier stars being completed first, which means you can’t just tackle them in any order.
So this guide walks through each Black Star step-by-step, along with what you actually need beforehand so you don’t waste time trying something that isn’t possible yet.
Tile Puzzle Star
This is usually the first Black Star most players encounter because it appears early and doesn’t require heavy upgrades.
You’ll find a floor covered with hidden panels. The mechanic here revolves around throwing blueberries onto each tile to reveal images. Each image belongs to a matching pair, so the goal is basically a memory puzzle.
If you reveal two tiles that don’t match, they reset, and you’re forced to wait until the next day cycle to try again. That’s the part that makes it annoying rather than difficult.
Once you successfully match all pairs, you unlock the Black Star and also receive the computer password, which becomes important later.
Radio Math Star
This one cannot be done until you have the upgraded sledgehammer because you need to break walls around the computer room first.
Behind those walls you’ll uncover numbers painted near radio hints. These numbers correspond to button presses on the radio device.
The key rule here is that you always start with the right button, because the sequence follows an “addition first” logic.
Once you input the full correct button order, the star unlocks and you also receive a tape, which contributes to the game’s lore pieces.
Smoothie Star
This one is where the upgrade requirements really start stacking. You need the third sledgehammer upgrade, the chainsaw upgrade, and the computer password from the tile puzzle.
After breaking through the deeper wall layers, you’ll discover a smoothie stand. Inside the computer nearby is a text file listing the exact recipe.
To create the correct smoothie, you need to shred a specific set of fruits on the chainsaw. The amounts matter, but the order doesn’t.
When you bring the completed smoothie to the stand, the star unlocks and you reveal another piece of hidden story content.
Trophy Star
This is one of the longer ones because it depends heavily on random chance and progression.
You need the bubble upgrade, access to a pumpkin buddy, and you must have cleared walls around the computer building to reveal the concrete layer.
Inside a hidden trophy room, you’ll find pedestals requiring golden versions of specific berries. These don’t always spawn quickly, so it can take multiple in-game days to collect them all.
Upgrading golden berry spawn rates helps a lot here, as does improving your berry harvesting abilities.
Once all pedestals are filled, the star unlocks along with additional lore.
Push Pin Stars
This puzzle appears in the final wall layer near a large blue push pin surrounded by smaller colored pins.
The mechanic revolves around using the hole to reveal how many pins lie between different colored shapes and the large blue pin.
Once you determine the correct counts, you enter those numbers using the tomato pincushion objects tied to each shape.
After inputting everything correctly, interacting with the blue push pin unlocks the star.
This one tends to confuse players because it’s more about observation than interaction.
Taxi Star
This one is actually simple compared to most others.
Near the star door in the final layer, you’ll see a clock. At certain times, a yellow taxi drives through the area and clips into the wall.
To get the star, you just need to position a large enough hole along the taxi’s path and wait for it to fall in.
Once it gets swallowed, the Black Star unlocks immediately.
Final Black Star
This is easily the strangest and most confusing one in the game.
Behind the final layer, there’s a hidden gap marked by the same floating star indicator as the others. To access it, you need to carefully position the hole between the outer wall and a secret room, creating a path.
Using the bubble ability, you then float through this gap into a hidden area.
Inside, you’ll find what looks like an infinite hallway. Walking forward does nothing — the trick is to walk backward while facing the green wall. Doing this eventually leads you to a flower.
Touching the flower alone doesn’t unlock the star. After being teleported out, you must also pop the bubble outside the entrance to trigger the actual Black Star reward.
How Black Stars Fit Into Progression
Most Black Stars aren’t meant to be solved immediately when you find them. They’re designed as long-term goals that become possible only after collecting upgrades, unlocking tools, and exploring hidden areas.
If you ever feel stuck, it’s usually because you’re missing an upgrade rather than missing a puzzle clue.
Once you understand that, hunting Black Stars becomes much less frustrating — and honestly much more fun.
