Best Non-legendary Characters
I‘ll start with Dino, who in my eyes is the best non-legendary mage for two simple reasons:
His primary element is air, which is useful in Abyss 1.
His secondary element is earth, which is extremely useful in Abyss 2.
His alignment is neutral, so he plays well with most (if not all) notable alignment bonuses from other heroes.
Once the game gets more content this may change, but for now, if you can’t get your hands on a legendary mage, Dino is your guy.
Barbara (knight) and Marianne (priest) are cost-effective picks. They both reduce the cost of their skills. Especially nice for the early game, but still nice later as Knights don’t get a whole lot of SP if you plan on spamming stun bash.
Elise (fighter) is notable. She is Earth, which is helpful for Abyss 2. She also enhances neutral unit damage in front/ behind her. The boost is small but can mean the difference for units like Yeka who won’t always reach the threshold to oneshot lizards in Abyss 2 otherwise.
Ophelia (fighter) is wind. Mostly notable because you can find a wind weapon early, and she ends up doing a lot of weakness damage with it in Abyss 1. She has a niche boost to atk/acc against aerial units, which is common enough, but not noticeable enough for me to comment on. She also gets drunk in the tavern.
Viviana (thief) is water and has a passive that increases evasion while wearing clothes. It’s a pretty hefty bonus, considering how small most passives end up being. It is much easier to build full evasion on the front line with this passive. I expect she’ll also be good if the next dungeon ends up being fire.
Chloe’s (fire) discipline skill raises her SP, even at level 1 it’s noticeable as you can spam her skills way more than other fighters and knights if you change her class to the knight. She also has an advantage versus Adventurers enemies like Yeka has over Undeads
The game has a relatively small number of mages, in terms of elemental variety. Mages are one of your few options for directly inflicting specific elemental damage. They’re also the only option outside items or Alice’s Special Art for dealing AoE (row or all-group) damage. At launch (without class change), we have:
- Light: Adam (Legendary)
- Earth: Yekaterina (Legendary)
- Water: Flut
- Fire: Asha
- Wind: Jarmil, Dino
- Dark: Elf-mag (Nameless)
This is a very restricted set of options, with two elements only represented by Legendary characters. So, Asha is your only Fire Mage option, Flut is your only Water Mage option, etc.
This doesn’t mean you need to rush out and level each mage, but it’s worth mentioning how relatively restricted your ability to do AoE attacks with advantage, etc. is.
It’s part of why Yekaterina is so strong in the 2nd dungeon (Earth beats Water). So you can imagine other mages shining in different/future content. Something to consider when leveling characters outside your “main” par
Wizardry Variants Daphne Characters Tips
How should I spend my bonus points on X character?
- In the long run, this really doesn’t matter. There is also no true community consensus.
- Some people recommend putting all the bonus points towards the character’s primary stat.
- Other people recommend putting all of the bonus points towards speed.
- Some people recommend splitting them between the character’s primary stat, speed, and vitality.
There is no wrong way to do this, and when you get to level 30+, it’s very easy to have a character’s points in a stat be in the 30s and 40s, so a few more points here and there won’t make or break a character.
There is no way for you to “brick” a character by choosing a specific point distribution.
What should I do with my duplicicates of X character?
There’s no hard or fast rule on this either. I put some of my personal thoughts and suggestions in the Character Analysis tab, so feel free to follow those if you’d like. You can never go wrong by saving a duplicate for future use, though.
What are character duplicates used for?
They can be used to:
1. Increase a character’s Discipline level
2. Increase a character’s unique skill level
3. Inherit a character’s inheritable unique skill to another character (or your MC)
4. Dismiss for Grade Tags
While dismissing a Legendary character seems scary, it’s possible that for some characters,
that will be the absolute best value of their duplicates due to the fact that dismissing a level 1 Legendary character that has not completed a grade-up exam will give you
1 No Grade Tag and 1 Iron Grade Tag. Grade tags could easily be a bottleneck as we get to higher levels.
