When Research first unlocks in World 7, it can feel confusing because it doesn’t behave like normal IdleOn skills. There’s no simple “train → level → repeat” loop. Instead, it works more like a long-term knowledge system that slowly strengthens your entire account.
This guide explains the Research skill in a straightforward, player-focused way — helping you understand what actually matters early, how to progress efficiently, and which upgrades are worth your time.
IdleOn Research Skill Guide – World 7 Observatory System
Research is an AFK progression system tied to discovering hidden “Observations” across the game world. Each observation acts like a permanent knowledge source that generates Research XP when studied.
Unlike combat or gathering skills, Research is not about grinding enemies or resources — it’s about exploration, discovery, and long-term scaling.
Think of it as a giant account-wide upgrade tree that boosts nearly every system in IdleOn.
Research Progression
To start Research, you interact with the Research Desk in Shimmerfin Deep. From there, your main goal becomes finding observations and assigning tools to study them.
Each observation requires a successful roll to unlock. Once unlocked, you can study it continuously to generate Research XP.
The more observations you discover and study at once, the faster your Research level increases.
Magnifying Glasses
Magnifying glasses determine how many observations you can study simultaneously.
Early progression is heavily limited by how many of these tools you have. Unlocking more glasses quickly should be your top priority because they directly increase XP income.
Players who ignore this early will progress far slower than those who expand their research capacity first.
Research Levels and Points
As you gain Research XP, your level increases. Each level provides Research Points, which are used to unlock upgrades on the Research Grid.
The grid is a massive upgrade system filled with permanent bonuses, system unlocks, and scaling multipliers.
Some upgrades provide new mechanics, while others improve existing ones.
Research Grid
The grid serves two main purposes:
Unlocking entirely new gameplay systems
Providing permanent account-wide multipliers
Many upgrades also scale per level, meaning their power increases significantly over time.
Because the grid is very large, choosing the right early path is crucial.
Early Game
When starting Research, your first focus should always be increasing XP gain.
Upgrades that multiply Research XP will provide far more long-term value than rushing system unlocks too early.
Once XP growth is stable, you should then increase daily observation rolls so you can discover new observations faster.
Only after securing these should you start unlocking secondary mechanics.
One of the most unique aspects of Research is how it connects to many different parts of the game.
For example, it unlocks the Sticker Depot, which introduces a farming mechanic where special mega crops generate permanent bonus stickers.
It also unlocks Tiny Cogs, a system that provides daily items boosting construction speed.
Gaming receives new progression through Zuperbits, expanding late-game bit scaling.
The Mr. Minehead mini-game adds a daily challenge that rewards account bonuses.
Glimbo trading introduces a way to exchange items for powerful vault upgrades.
Finally, the Polymer Refinery adds a new resource production tier with strong long-term benefits.
Mid-Game Focus Areas
After establishing strong XP growth, your next priorities should be efficiency upgrades.
These include bonuses that increase research points gained over time, improve observation discovery chances, and boost the effectiveness of tools used in research.
At this stage, unlocking systems that strengthen your existing progression paths becomes more important than raw XP alone.
Late-Game Scaling Benefits
In the later stages, Research provides massive account multipliers tied to specific mechanics.
These include true damage bonuses from sticker collection, improvements to sailing artifacts, talent level caps, and enhanced class experience multipliers.
At high levels, these upgrades significantly impact overall account power.
How Offline Progress Works
Research can generate XP while offline, but the gains are significantly reduced compared to active play.
Certain grid upgrades improve offline efficiency, but keeping at least one character online remains the fastest way to progress.
Because of this, Research is considered one of the most active-AFK hybrid systems in the game.
