If you are trying to unlock every historical Officer in Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, you might think you need to complete a huge number of Musou Modes. Thankfully, that is not the case. With the right characters and a little planning, you can unlock the entire historical roster in just six Musou Mode completions.
In this guide, I’ll show you the exact route I recommend, including which characters to use, which Officers you can unlock during each campaign, and the important conditions you need to complete along the way. Some battles have very specific requirements, so I’ll also point out the parts where you need to be especially careful.
How to Unlock Historical Officer in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered
The six characters you want to use are Xiahou Dun, Zhenji, Zhao Yun, Gan Ning, Da Qiao, and Zhuge Liang. If you follow this route correctly, you can satisfy the required Wei, Wu, and Shu campaign completions while unlocking as many character-specific Officers as possible along the way.
Optimized Six-Run Route
The route is:
- Xiahou Dun
- Zhenji
- Zhao Yun
- Gan Ning
- Da Qiao
- Zhuge Liang
The reason this works so well is that the historical roster requires:
- 2 Wei Musou Mode completions
- 2 Shu Musou Mode completions
- 2 Wu Musou Mode completions
Instead of completing random campaigns, we can choose characters whose routes also contain important Officer unlocks.
The full route is:
Xiahou Dun → Zhenji → Zhao Yun → Gan Ning → Da Qiao → Zhuge Liang
Run 1 — Xiahou Dun
I recommend starting with Xiahou Dun because his Musou Mode is packed with important Wei-side unlocks.
You can unlock several Officers during his campaign, and completing his Musou Mode also gives you multiple additional characters.
Officers to Unlock During the Campaign
Zhang Jiao — During the Yellow Turban Rebellion, defeat:
- Zhang Bao
- Zhang Liang
- Zhang Jiao
Diaochan — At Hu Lao Gate, defeat Diaochan.
Lu Bu — At Hu Lao Gate, reach 1,000 KOs.
Dong Zhuo — At Hu Lao Gate, defeat both Diaochan and Lu Bu.
Yuan Shao — During the Battle of Guan Du, personally defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou before Guan Yu defeats either of them.
Gan Ning — At He Fei as Wei, trigger Gan Ning’s surprise attack and defeat him.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Xiahou Dun’s Musou Mode
Once you complete the first Musou Mode, you will unlock:
- Xu Zhu
- Zhenji
- Sima Yi
- Ziluan
Zhenji is especially important because she will be used for the second run.
Hu Lao Gate Optimization
This is one of the easiest places to save yourself unnecessary battles.
You do not need to replay Hu Lao Gate separately for Diaochan, Dong Zhuo, and Lu Bu.
You can unlock all three during the same battle.
The easiest order is:
- Defeat Diaochan.
- Defeat Lu Bu.
- Reach 1,000 total KOs before finishing the stage.
Doing all of this in one battle should unlock:
- Diaochan
- Dong Zhuo
- Lu Bu
So there is no reason to play Hu Lao Gate three separate times.
Run 2 — Zhenji
After completing Xiahou Dun’s Musou Mode, Zhenji becomes available.
The main purpose of this run is to complete your second Wei Musou Mode and satisfy the Wei requirement for the historical roster.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Zhenji’s Musou Mode
Completing Zhenji’s campaign unlocks:
- Cao Cao
- Xu Huang
There are no major battlefield-specific Officer requirements that you need to complete during this campaign for this particular six-run route.
So, if your only goal is the historical roster, you can focus on completing Zhenji’s Musou Mode efficiently.
Why Use Zhenji?
You could technically use another qualifying Wei Officer for the second completion, but Zhenji is the better choice for this route.
The reason is that her completion also helps toward the eventual requirements for Nuwa.
So, with one campaign, you are progressing both the historical roster and the later mythological character unlocks.
After finishing this run, your standard Wei roster should be complete.
Run 3 — Zhao Yun
Now move over to Shu and start with Zhao Yun.
His campaign is particularly useful because it contains several important Shu-side battlefield unlocks.
Officers to Unlock During the Campaign
Pang Tong — At Assault on Cheng Du, keep Pang Tong alive and defeat Zhang Ren early to protect him.
Xiahou Yuan — At Mt. Ding Jun, defeat Xiahou Yuan.
Meng Huo — During the Nanman Campaign, defeat Meng Huo at all seven appearances.
Zhurong — During the Nanman Campaign, defeat Zhurong.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Zhao Yun’s Musou Mode
Once you complete Zhao Yun’s campaign, you unlock:
- Zhuge Liang
- Ma Chao
- Wei Yan
Zhuge Liang is important because he will be your sixth and final run.
Nanman Campaign Optimization
The Nanman Campaign is one of the most important battles in this entire route.
You need to unlock both Meng Huo and Zhurong during the same campaign.
The biggest thing to remember is do not finish the battle too early.
You need to defeat Meng Huo every time he reappears.
He appears seven times, and you need to defeat him during all seven appearances.
You also need to defeat Zhurong when she becomes available.
So I recommend following this order:
- Start the battle normally.
- Defeat Meng Huo whenever he appears.
- Continue until all seven appearances have been defeated.
- Defeat Zhurong when she becomes available.
- Only finish the stage once both requirements are complete.
Do not leave the Nanman Campaign until you are certain you defeated Meng Huo seven times.
Missing even one appearance can mean having to repeat the entire battle.
Run 4 — Gan Ning
By this point, you should already have unlocked Gan Ning during Xiahou Dun’s campaign.
Now use him for your first Wu Musou Mode completion.
Gan Ning’s campaign is particularly efficient because you can combine several important Wu-side unlocks while also progressing toward Lu Xun and Da Qiao.
Officers to Unlock During the Campaign
Zhang Liao — At He Fei as Wu, defeat Zhang Liao.
Sun Quan — At He Fei, complete the bridge-retreat and counterattack event sequence. You then need to allow Sun Quan or Sun Jian to force Cao Cao to retreat.
Lu Meng — At Fan Castle, complete the stage while keeping Lu Meng alive.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Gan Ning’s Musou Mode
Completing the campaign unlocks:
- Lu Xun
- Da Qiao
Lu Xun is also one of the strongest characters you can use once unlocked, so this run gives you a very useful reward.
Da Qiao will be important for the next run.
The Important He Fei Requirement
The Sun Quan unlock at He Fei is probably the most fragile part of this entire six-run route.
Do not simply rush into Cao Cao’s camp and defeat him.
You need to let the scripted events play out correctly.
The general sequence you want is:
- Allow Taishi Ci’s death sequence to occur.
- Allow the Wu commander to begin retreating toward the broken bridge.
- Meet the commander and trigger the bridge-jump event.
- Allow Zhang Liao to redeploy.
- Protect and save the Wu commander during the attack.
- Wait for the Wu counterattack to begin.
- Allow Sun Quan or Sun Jian to enter Cao Cao’s camp.
- Let them force Cao Cao to retreat.
You can defeat Zhang Liao during this battle to unlock him.
However, be careful not to personally defeat Cao Cao.
Things You Should NOT Do at He Fei
- Do not personally kill Cao Cao.
- Do not speed-clear the entire battlefield.
- Do not kill important Officers before their events happen.
- Do not assume that simply winning the battle will unlock Sun Quan.
This is one battle where patience is much more important than speed.
Run 5 — Da Qiao
For the second Wu campaign, use Da Qiao.
I prefer Da Qiao over Zhou Yu for this route because her Musou Mode helps with several objectives at once.
Her campaign:
- Unlocks Xiao Qiao.
- Counts toward the Nuwa requirement.
- Includes Assault on Wu Territory, where you can unlock Taishi Ci.
- Becomes your second completed Wu campaign.
Unlock Taishi Ci
At Assault on Wu Territory, you need to defeat Liu Yong before defeating Yan Baihu and Wang Lang.
If you complete this correctly, Taishi Ci should surrender and join Sun Ce’s forces.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Da Qiao’s Musou Mode
Completing the campaign unlocks:
- Xiao Qiao
- Sun Jian
- Sun Ce
Da Qiao also counts as one of the required female Musou Mode completions needed for Nuwa.
At this point, your standard Wu roster should be complete.
Run 6 — Zhuge Liang
For the final run, use Zhuge Liang.
This character is not just useful for completing the Shu requirement. His Musou Mode is specifically needed to unlock Jiang Wei.
Officers Unlocked After Completing Zhuge Liang’s Musou Mode
Completing his campaign unlocks:
- Jiang Wei
- Liu Bei
- Huang Zhong
You already completed Zhao Yun’s Musou Mode earlier, so Zhuge Liang becomes your second completed Shu campaign.
This means the final run accomplishes two things at once:
- It satisfies the character-specific requirement for Jiang Wei.
- It reaches the two-Shu-completion requirement for Liu Bei and Huang Zhong.
After finishing Zhuge Liang’s Musou Mode, your standard Shu roster should be complete.
Historical Roster Complete
Once you finish all six campaigns:
- Xiahou Dun
- Zhenji
- Zhao Yun
- Gan Ning
- Da Qiao
- Zhuge Liang
you should have unlocked every historical Officer required by this route.
The six-run requirement works because you have completed:
- 2 Wei campaigns — Xiahou Dun and Zhenji
- 2 Wu campaigns — Gan Ning and Da Qiao
- 2 Shu campaigns — Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang
These faction completion requirements unlock the remaining Officers such as Cao Cao, Sun Jian, Sun Ce, Liu Bei, and Huang Zhong.
What About Nuwa and Fuxi?
If you are only interested in the historical Three Kingdoms roster, you can stop after Run 6.
However, Nuwa and Fuxi are mythological bonus characters, so they require additional Musou Mode completions.
The good news is that this six-run route already gives you progress toward both characters.
Nuwa Requirements
You have already completed:
- Zhenji
- Da Qiao
You would still need to complete:
- Xiao Qiao
- Sun Shangxiang
to finish the required female Musou Mode completions for Nuwa.
Fuxi Requirements
For Fuxi, you would still need to complete:
- Cao Cao
- Liu Bei
- Sun Jian
So after finishing the six-run historical route, you need five additional Musou Mode completions to obtain both mythological characters.
Final Six-Run Checklist
If you want to keep this route open while playing, here is the simple version:
Run 1 — Xiahou Dun
- Unlock Zhang Jiao
- Unlock Diaochan
- Unlock Lu Bu
- Unlock Dong Zhuo
- Unlock Yuan Shao
- Unlock Gan Ning
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Xu Zhu, Zhenji, Sima Yi, and Ziluan
Run 2 — Zhenji
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Cao Cao and Xu Huang
- Progress toward Nuwa
Run 3 — Zhao Yun
- Keep Pang Tong alive
- Defeat Xiahou Yuan
- Defeat Meng Huo seven times
- Defeat Zhurong
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, and Wei Yan
Run 4 — Gan Ning
- Defeat Zhang Liao at He Fei
- Complete the He Fei event sequence
- Do not personally kill Cao Cao
- Keep Lu Meng alive at Fan Castle
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Lu Xun and Da Qiao
Run 5 — Da Qiao
- Unlock Taishi Ci at Assault on Wu Territory
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Xiao Qiao, Sun Jian, and Sun Ce
- Progress toward Nuwa
Run 6 — Zhuge Liang
- Complete Musou Mode
- Unlock Jiang Wei
- Unlock Liu Bei
- Unlock Huang Zhong
- Complete the second Shu campaign requirement
If your goal is to unlock the entire historical Officer roster as efficiently as possible, this six-run route saves you a lot of unnecessary Musou Mode playthroughs.
The most important thing is to pay attention to the specific battlefield requirements, especially the Hu Lao Gate, Nanman Campaign, and He Fei events. These are the battles where rushing through the stage can cause you to miss an unlock and force you to repeat the campaign.
For the historical roster, simply finish the six runs in this order: Xiahou Dun → Zhenji → Zhao Yun → Gan Ning → Da Qiao → Zhuge Liang.
Once Zhuge Liang’s Musou Mode is complete, you should have the full historical roster. If you want to go further and unlock the mythological characters, you can then continue with the additional Nuwa and Fuxi requirements.
