If you have been playing Gear Defenders, you already know that not every troop performs the same on the battlefield. Some units dominate waves, while others are useful only in specific situations. After testing different troops and looking at their strengths, production speed, and abilities, this guide breaks down which heroes are actually worth using.
The Gear Defenders Tier List starts with rare units, then moves to epic and legendary heroes. Keep in mind that rarity alone does not decide power in this game. Some lower-rarity units can still carry fights if upgraded properly.
S+ Tier
Paladin
The Paladin sits at the very top of the tier list and for good reason. This hero has everything you want in a frontline unit: high health, strong attack, good movement speed, and reliable area damage.
Instead of hitting just one enemy, the Paladin attacks with a spinning hammer-like weapon that damages enemies all around him. This makes him extremely effective against groups.
He also brings utility to the team. His holy shield ability absorbs part of the damage taken by nearby allies, making your entire frontline much harder to kill. On top of that, he can pull slower allies forward to the frontline, which creates a strong defensive wall quickly.
Pairing Paladin with tank units like Heavy Guard creates one of the strongest combinations in the game. If you ever pull this unit from summons, it instantly becomes the centerpiece of your team.
S Tier
Heavy Guard
Heavy Guard is one of the strongest tank units available. While the production speed is slow and the movement speed is not impressive, the raw durability more than makes up for it.
This unit is immune to critical hits and can block enemies in place, allowing your damage dealers to attack safely from behind. It also reduces area damage taken by nearby allies, which is extremely useful against enemy units that rely on splash attacks.
When properly supported with speed-boosting gear, Heavy Guard becomes almost impossible for enemies to break through. Many successful team compositions rely on this unit as the main frontline anchor.
Shielder
Shielder might surprise some players by ranking this high, especially since it is a rare unit. However, tanks are slightly overtuned in Gear Defenders, and Shielder benefits greatly from this.
This unit has high health, strong attack for a tank, and fast production speed. Because it is easy to upgrade compared to rarer units, you can quickly create large groups of Shielders that overwhelm enemies.
In many situations, simply flooding the field with Shielders can stall enemies long enough for your backline units to finish them off.
A Tier
Cataphract
Cataphract is a cavalry unit that specializes in pushing enemy lines. While its stats may not look impressive at first glance, the key strength comes from its attack style.
Instead of striking one target, Cataphract swings its lance in a wide arc, hitting multiple enemies. This gives it constant area damage, making it particularly effective against tightly packed enemy waves.
Because it is also strong against ranged units, Cataphract is great for dealing with annoying backline enemies that normally stay protected.
Arbalist
Arbalist is one of the best ranged damage dealers in the game. Its attacks pierce through enemies, allowing it to damage multiple targets with a single shot.
Once upgraded, it can fire extra bolts and even perform guaranteed critical attacks. This dramatically increases its damage output during intense fights.
Although enemies behind the first target take reduced damage, the ability to hit multiple enemies at once still makes Arbalist extremely valuable in large battles.
Spearman (Rare)
The rare Spearman is one of the most dependable units early and mid game. Despite not being flashy, it offers a balanced combination of damage, health, and range.
The long spear attack allows this unit to hit enemies before they reach the frontline. It also has strong damage against infantry units, which appear frequently throughout the game.
Even though production speed is a bit slower, the consistent performance makes Spearman a solid addition to most teams.
B+ Tier
Lancer
Lancer is a cavalry unit designed to counter ranged enemies. The high movement speed allows it to close distance quickly and disrupt enemy backlines.
It also gains extra damage against ranged units, making it a useful situational pick.
However, stronger cavalry options appear later in the game, which prevents Lancer from reaching the top tiers.
Barbarian
Barbarian focuses on aggressive combat with high critical rate and fast production speed. When upgraded, it can trigger whirlwind attacks that deal area damage.
The ability to jump into battle also helps it reach enemies quickly.
Despite these strengths, Barbarian lacks specific advantages against certain enemy types, which slightly lowers its overall impact compared to other units.
Mage
Mage is one of the stronger ranged attackers thanks to high attack power and excellent critical rate. It can also unlock powerful abilities such as splash damage and meteor attacks as it levels up.
This makes Mage capable of dealing heavy damage to enemy waves.
The main drawback is that its standard attacks only hit one target at a time, which limits its effectiveness compared to multi-target units like Arbalist.
Legendary Spearman
The legendary version of Spearman improves nearly everything about the rare version. It attacks faster, has better health, and deals more damage.
The extended spear range also allows it to attack enemies safely from behind frontline units.
While it is a solid legendary unit, it does not introduce any game-changing mechanics, which keeps it slightly below the top tier.
Ninja
Ninja focuses on speed rather than raw damage. Its attack speed and production speed are both extremely high, allowing you to flood the battlefield with ninjas quickly.
It also gains abilities like smoke screens and shadow clones, which can distract enemies and protect your main forces.
Although the damage per attack is not very high, the constant stream of attacks makes Ninja a decent ranged option.
B Tier
Warrior
Warrior is the first unit most players receive. It has balanced stats across the board but lacks any standout strengths.
While it is reliable early in the game, stronger units quickly replace it as your roster expands.
Because it does not excel in any specific role, Warrior ends up sitting in the middle tier.
Archer
Archer is essentially the ranged counterpart of Warrior. It offers basic ranged attacks with moderate production speed.
After upgrading, Archer can occasionally fire multiple arrows at once, improving damage output slightly.
However, low health and low attack prevent Archer from competing with stronger ranged units like Arbalist or Mage.
C Tier
Alchemist
Alchemist throws gas canisters that can poison enemies, dealing damage over time. While this sounds strong in theory, several problems hold the unit back.
The production speed is extremely slow, meaning it takes a long time to deploy multiple Alchemists. Additionally, the poison effect requires upgrades before it becomes available.
Without area damage or strong stats, Alchemist struggles to justify a spot in most team compositions.
Caveman
Caveman is a legendary unit that unfortunately does not feel legendary. Its health and attack are lower than expected, and its main ability deals bonus damage to walls.
Because wall-focused abilities only matter in a few specific levels, the Caveman rarely shines in normal battles.
Even though the critical rate and production speed are decent, other legendary units simply provide more value.
The current meta heavily favors tank units and area damage. Characters like Paladin, Heavy Guard, and Shielder dominate because they can control the battlefield and survive long enough for your damage dealers to work.
If you are building a strong team composition, a simple but effective setup looks like this:
Frontline
Heavy Guard + Shielder
Damage Dealers
Arbalist or Mage
Support / Pressure
Cataphract or Ninja
And if you manage to unlock Paladin, it instantly becomes the core of your team.
As the game continues to update and new heroes appear, the tier list may change. For now, focusing on strong tanks and multi-target attackers will give you the best chance of clearing difficult stages.
