How to Use the Battle Machine in Merge Tactics (Guide)

The Battle Machine brings one of the most unique playstyles Merge Tactics has ever seen. Instead of relying heavily on early-round economy or aggressive rerolling, this hero rewards players who can survive, position their units intelligently, and make the most out of the free buildings it generates. If you manage your rounds properly, the Battle Machine delivers stability, guaranteed merges, and a reliable path through the early game—even when your troop RNG isn’t perfect.

This guide breaks down exactly how the Battle Machine works, how to position every key building, which comps perform best, what counter-matchups you should watch out for, and how to approach each phase of the game.

How the Battle Machine Works

The Battle Machine gives you free buildings on rounds:

1, 3, 5, and 8

That means your early-round priority flips completely compared to most heroes. Instead of sacrificing HP to build your economy or chase merges, your goal is to stay alive until these free buildings arrive.

Every building is automatically delivered at a fixed star level depending on the round:

  • Round 1: 1-star building
  • Round 3: 2-star building
  • Round 5: 3-star building
  • Round 8: 3-star building (high-impact)

Because of this, you don’t want to play greedily or sell HP in the early rounds. Your economy is basically being handled by the Battle Machine itself.

Building Placement: The Most Important Skill

Once placed, buildings cannot be moved. This one detail defines the entire playstyle of the Battle Machine. A single bad placement can handicap your whole late game, so treat every building like a permanent anchor in your formation.

Below is the recommended placement for each building type.

Inferno Tower – Place in the Second-to-Last Lane

The Inferno Tower is one of the strongest buildings you can roll, especially at 3-star. It melts high-HP threats such as Pekka, Prince, and Giants.

However, its range does not reach the entire map if you place it at the very back. The best spot is:

  • Second-to-last lane, not the very last.

This lets the beam begin damaging enemies the moment they walk into midrange. If you put it too far back, it often activates too late or gets destroyed by assassins before contributing.

Tesla – Always Front Row

Tesla only has 1 tile of range, which means:

  • If you put it in the back, it might not fire at all.
  • If you put it in midline, it sometimes activates too late.
  • If you put it in the front, it gets immediate value.

So the Tesla belongs in the very front row. It shines specifically against melee comps, where enemies are naturally forced into its range. Against heavy backline teams, its impact decreases dramatically.

Expo – High Power, Long Charge Time

The Expo can delete units rapidly once it is fully charged, but its drawback is noticeable:

  • It takes a long time to activate.
  • If your frontline collapses early, it never fires.
  • Against assassin comps, it is unreliable.

This building is dangerous when protected by a tank-heavy comp, but difficult to use consistently in real matches with the Battle Machine’s low-merge late game. Expect high volatility.

Elixir Pump – Great at 3-Star, Weak at 1-Star

The Pump’s performance depends entirely on its star level.

  • 1-star pump: Almost useless. It usually won’t generate a single elixir before the round ends.
  • 3-star pump: Extremely fast generation, but occurs mid-game when you may already have a strong comp.

Use it for:

  • Mid-round income spikes
  • Occasional body-blocking (placing it one tile forward so it takes hits for your core buildings)

But don’t expect it to be a win condition.

Early Game Strategy (Rounds 1–3)

Your job in the early rounds is simple:

Survive and buy only high-value troops.

Unlike heroes such as the Empress or Goblin Machine, you do not sacrifice HP to chase economy. Your free buildings are your economy.

Prioritize:

  • Strong frontline units
  • Troops with good traits
  • High synergy upgrades

Avoid:

  • Buying weak goblins for merges
  • Selling health for rerolls
  • Trying to force a composition too early

The Battle Machine ensures your round 1 and 3 won’t be catastrophic—even with mediocre rolls—since the buildings stabilize your field.

Mid Game Strategy (Rounds 3–5)

By this stage you’ll have:

  • A 2-star building (often high value)
  • A few merges
  • A forming frontline

Your goal is to shift toward a strong, durable frontline, because your late-game buildings—Expo, Inferno Tower, Tesla—only reach peak value if they are protected.

Best mid-game frontline cores include:

  • Four-Clan frontline
  • Brutalist core (Valkyrie splash helps mark multiple enemies)
  • Balanced lineups with 2–3 tanks

Avoid heavy ranger or blaster stacking; that meta was tied to the Elixir Loom season and doesn’t suit the Battle Machine’s structure.

Late Game Strategy (Rounds 5–8)

On round 5, your guaranteed 3-star building drops in, and this can dramatically swing the match.

Best possible rolls:

  • 3-star Inferno Tower (game-winning in many cases)
  • 3-star Tesla (excellent vs melee)
  • 3-star Expo (extremely strong if protected)

Worst roll:

  • 3-star Elixir Pump (still useful, but often too late to change the match)

At this stage you want:

  • Maximum frontline durability
  • Smart building spacing
  • Backline troops arranged safely
  • Superstars that complement your comp

Your frontline must stay alive long enough for your back attachments—like Expo or Inferno Tower—to output consistent damage.

The Battle Machine transforms Merge Tactics into a completely different experience. Instead of rerolling aggressively or gambling on merge cycles, you play a calculated, survival-first strategy built around reliable building spikes. The hero performs consistently, stabilizes bad RNG, and provides strong power spikes with its free 3-star structures.

However, it struggles heavily against assassin lineups and requires near-perfect placement to fully shine.

If you can master placement discipline and pair it with a sturdy frontline, the Battle Machine becomes one of the most dependable and rewarding heroes in the game.
