Into the Dead Our Darkest Days Guide & Walkthrough
Start With a Secret Character Combo
When launching the game, hit Alt + F4 before selecting your character. Then reopen the game and click Continue. Surprise — you’ll start with two random survivors. This little trick lets you start with character combos normally impossible to choose. Try your luck and see what setup you get.
Pick Diane as Your Main Scavenger
She’s your go-to for collecting metal and fasteners, which you’ll need early to unlock Workbench Level 2 and craft the pistol — the only firearm available in the demo. Her “Untiring” perk makes her perfect for long scavenging runs, and “Optimus” gives a minor morale bump (not game-changing, but nice to have). Just keep her away from building duties — her poor craftsmanship slows things down.
Daryl and Leo: Prioritize Weapon Bench Early
If you’re starting with these two, gather metal and fasteners fast. A weapon bench is crucial — don’t make the mistake of delaying it like many do on their first run.
Daryl’s got “Iron Stomach” (won’t help with morale loss from gross food) but shines with Whittler, giving weapon crafting discounts.
Leo brings “Slugger” and “Tough,” useful if you go melee-heavy. Just note: “Gracious” makes him hungrier, but that’s manageable in the demo.
Smart Stealth Weapon Choices
Tomahawk = Best of both worlds: quiet and durable.
Hammers = Loud but strong.
Knives = Silent but fragile.
Use blunt weapons only when isolated; otherwise, knives or tomahawks are your stealth friends.
Hector & Kayla Strategy
They’re not a dream duo, but there’s a way to make them work:
Head south and barricade the Texway Gas Station Garden.
Hector’s “Gearhead” helps with dismantling.
Kayla has fewer backpack slots (10 instead of 12) and “Evasive” isn’t super noticeable, but stick to light lockpick runs and let others handle heavy lifting.
Daphne & Penny Are OP – But Not for Beginners
Daphne is a good cook — your crew won’t go hungry.
Penny is the stealth queen, thanks to her “Sneaky” perk. But her “Haunted” trait gives her nightmares when hit, which can mess with morale.
If you’re new, this pair might make things harder due to how different zombies react to Penny compared to others.
Joe = Best Scavenger in the Game
Found via radio at Texway Gas Station.
“Strong Shoulders” = 14 inventory slots.
“Gearhead” is a bonus.
Just plan his rest schedule smartly — you want him fresh for big scavenging hauls.
Aubrey’s a Hidden Healer
Found at Walton Taxi Depot. “Refined Taste” sounds picky, but she’ll still eat slop just fine. Her veterinarian skill gives you two healing items instead of one — a sneaky OP trait in this version of the game.
Frank: Your Apocalypse Chef
Found at Fire Station #8, which has the most food. His “Bad Back” keeps him out of the field, but in the kitchen, he’s gold. Pair him with Daphne, and your team’s eating better than most survivors dream of.
